  • HoM: Star Trek Podcast - "The Wounded" (TNG) Review & More
    2025/07/13

Series 7, Episode 1 - "To paraphrase Mystery Science Theater 3000; "that's one butt ugly spaceship you got there"!"

Welcome back to a brand-new series of Hit or Miss: Star Trek! This time, we’re shifting focus to two of Trek’s most complex and compelling races—linked by tragic history and unforgettable storytelling, whether together or apart: the Cardassians and the Bajorans. We’re kicking off with The Next Generation season 4 episode “The Wounded,” marking the very first appearance of the Cardassians. Captain Mike has his briefing notes ready and is prepped to lead this podcast away team. Sadly, First Officer D.K. has been reassigned and won't be returning, as he's off on a top secret mission (rumours involve an unstable wormhole, time travel and a lot of Saurian Brandy). But since this deep dive into Cardassians was a topic she definitely didn’t force—ahem, inspire—us to cover, we’re joined by the Cardassian Queen herself: Lady Vean! And she’s brought backup, introducing new recruit Natalie, a first-time guest with a top-notch Starfleet service record. We kick things off with Natalie’s Trek history and favourites before diving into the now surely legendary Hit or Miss section. Then it’s on to our main episode review, covering early Cardassian fashion blunders, haunting real-world allegory, brilliant performances, Picard’s diplomacy—and much more. So pour yourself a glass of kanar (however you pronounce it), and settle in for a mix of deep analysis and celebratory geek-out.

Apologies for the minor technical glitches with Vean's connection. Rest assured we've edited her audio so that you will hopefully barely notice, and her subspace transceiver has already been repaired ready for the next episode.

  • SSP Cinema Classics 17 - Superman (1978)
    2025/07/05

Cinema Classics Number 17 - "Live as one of them, Kal-El, but discover where your strength and power are needed. And always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage."

Welcome. We're taking you from the doomed planet Kryton to the wheat fields of Smallville and the big city of Metropolis for our latest deep dive into classic cinema magic. Mike-El and D.K. Olsen are joined by guest Super Sandy Eavenson for a soaring celebration of Superman: The Movie — the film that made us believe a man could fly and set the gold standard for superhero cinema. Host Michael shares his deep personal connection to this 1978 classic, as the team explores why Richard Donner’s focus on verisimilitude still matters, how Christopher Reeve gave us the definitive Superman and Clark Kent, and why Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane remains untouchable. Plus: Gene Hackman’s charmingly evil Lex Luthor, those unforgettable effects, and the mythic power of the Man of Steel’s story. Expect laughs, insight, reverence (with just a splash of irreverence), and a few surprises — from Brando’s surreal script demands to Sandy’s uncanny Hackman impression. Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered which British TV wine expert made a cameo as a Metropolis crook… D.K.’s got you covered. Come fly with us. No cheesy poems. We promise.
