    Welcome back to Small Screen Couch Commentary with Alex and Billy! This week, we're diving into House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 5, titled "Regent." Get ready for our discussion on the latest episode!

    At King's Landing, Criston Cole's army returns triumphantly, parading Meleys' head and attributing the victory to Aegon. However, the gravely wounded king is discreetly brought to the Red Keep, leaving the public unaware of his critical condition. Grand Maester Orwyle does his best to treat Aegon, but his condition moving forward is uncertain. The council at King's Landing is now left with no "leader" as someone tries to step up to the head of the table, but another is ultimately appointed by the other members.

    Meanwhile, Corlys and Rhaenyra privately mourn Rhaenys before returning to their duties. Rhaenyra faces a council that dismisses her authority, but she reasserts herself, demanding answers. She plans to name Corlys as her Hand, seeking stronger allies.

    Jace takes it upon himself to negotiate with House Frey, promising control of Harrenhal without Rhaenyra's consent. Alex expresses his concern for a secret meeting with the Frey's. Longtime Game of Thrones fans will know why. Meanwhile, Daemon struggles with his leadership at Harrenhal, and is still under some influence that continually make him have hallucinations. Alex and Billy both agree this story line needs to have some sort of finality soon and they debate whether Daemon is still one of their favorite characters.

Determined to prove her strength, she prepares for war. Rhaenys steps up, volunteering herself and Meleys for the impending battle at Rook’s Rest, determined to protect Rhaenyra and her claim.

    The climactic battle at Rook’s Rest is a spectacle of dragonfire and bloodshed. The skies are filled with flames as dragons clash in a deadly dance that sends the audience through a range of emotions that left some viewers gutted.

    Welcome back to "Small Screen Couch Commentary" where we have our first ever collaboration with Anna from Stone's Top Tens this week on our show! This week, we're diving into the chaos of House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 3, titled "The Burning Mill." Strap in for an episode packed with ancient rivalries, brutal battles, and tense political maneuvering.

    The episode kicks off with the age-old feud between the Brackens and the Blackwoods reigniting, thanks to their opposing loyalties in the Dance of the Dragons. The Brackens side with Aegon, while the Blackwoods back Rhaenyra. What starts as a scuffle over a boundary quickly escalates into a bloody battlefield strewn with bodies. It's clear: this war will have no true winners, only devastating losses.

    Criston Cole, now Hand of the King, suits up for his first small council meeting where his main concern, is securing the Riverlands after the Battle of the Burning Mill. He decides to personally lead a small scouting party to join the Brackens and claim Harrenhal, leaving Vhagar and Aemond to guard King's Landing.

    Before setting off, Criston gets a questionable haircut and an unwelcome companion: Alicent’s brother, Gwayne Hightower. The tension between Criston and Gwayne is palpable, with Gwayne’s barbs about Criston’s rise to power and Dornish heritage adding fuel to the fire.

    Back in the Red Keep, Alicent and Helaena mourn Jaehaerys. Alicent's maternal sorrow contrasts with Helaena's calm acceptance, leading to a poignant moment of forgiveness that Alicent never expected, and that left some viewers perplexed.

    On Dragonstone, Rhaenyra, Jace, and Rhaenys hold a vigil for the fallen Cargyll twins. Rhaenys points out the escalating cycle of revenge, urging Rhaenyra to consider peace. Alicent had reached out after Luke’s death, but Rhaenyra hasn't yet read her letter. Meanwhile, Daemon secures Harrenhal, confronting its haunted history and receiving a chilling prophecy from a mysterious woman.

    Tensions rise in Rhaenyra’s council as her advisors push for war. She sends her youngest children to safety. The farewells are tearful, especially between Rhaena and Baela, who don’t know when they’ll see each other again.

    Rhaenyra, finally reading Alicent's letter, arranges a secret meeting with her. Their conversation is heart-wrenching, with some quick ups and downs that ultimately leads them both to realize things are past the point of no return.

    The episode kicks off with absolute chaos following the death of young Jaehaerys. Servants are rounded up for interrogation in the dead of night, and King Viserys' painstakingly crafted model of King's Landing is being turned to rubble by a furious Aegon. Alex and Billy feel for King Aegon in this moment briefly discussing the loss of a child. Things quickly get serious as an emergency small council meeting convenes. Aegon demands Rhaenyra’s head, much to the chagrin of his advisors who remind him there's no solid proof she’s behind the murder.

    Otto Hightower, ever the strategist, suggests using Jaehaerys' death to turn public sentiment against Rhaenyra. Alex and Billy talk about Otto's schemes that get him closer to a seat of power knowing full well he can never actually sit on the Iron Throne. They also discuss the brutality and its impact on the already fragile morale in King's Landing. Otto's moves to garner favor with the citizens of King's Landing is potentially undone by the grieving King however.

    The episode doesn't shy away from the personal struggles of the characters. Ser Criston Cole is wracked with guilt, Alicent coaxes Helaena into an uncomfortable situation, and Otto Hightower finds himself at odds with Aegon's rash decisions. Alex and Billy highlight the fantastic performances, especially the chilling confrontation between Otto and Aegon.

    Back on Dragonstone, Rhaenyra is devastated by the accusations against her and confronts Daemon about his reckless actions. Their tense exchange reveals deep-seated mistrust and unresolved issues, leading to Daemon's abrupt departure. Rhaenyra's summoning of Mysaria adds another layer of intrigue, as they discuss Daemon’s character and past. This was certainly a high point for this episode in Alex and Billy's eyes.

    The climax of the episode is a nail-biter, with Ser Arryk sneaking into Dragonstone disguised as his twin, Ser Erryk, to assassinate Rhaenyra. The ensuing fight between the twins is intense and confusing, mirroring the show's complex web of loyalties. Alex and Billy discuss the heart breaking ended to this scene and whether or not what the audience thinks they see is really what happens.
