  • Sustainable South: Wilfred Asuquo (Nigeria)
    2024/10/27

In today’s episode, we’re thrilled to introduce an extraordinary leader from West Africa, Asuquo Wilfred Okon. Based in Nigeria, Asuquo is a force to be reckoned with in the fields of research, policy development, program management, and advocacy. With a rich background that spans multiple sectors, he brings both expertise and passion to his work, making a tangible impact in the communities he serves.

Asuquo currently represents two organizations that are at the forefront of social change. First, he represents the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in Akwa Ibom State, where he is dedicated to protecting, promoting, and preserving the rights of women and children. His work with FIDA goes beyond legal advocacy; he collaborates with local stakeholders to foster transparency and accountability, addressing systemic issues that impact vulnerable groups.

In addition to his advocacy with FIDA, Asuquo is also a driving force at Enactus, University of Uyo. He coordinates innovative programs focused on tackling one of Nigeria's most pressing environmental challenges—waste management. Enactus is known for its groundbreaking initiatives, including “Biogas Tech,” which transforms organic waste into biogas, providing clean energy to local fishermen. This project not only promotes renewable energy but also creates economic opportunities for the community.

Another flagship initiative led by Asuquo is the “Waste-to-Wealth Initiative.” This pioneering project recycles nylon and disposable plastics, turning pollutants into useful products such as pillows and blankets.

  • Sustainable South: Oleksandra Fomin (Ukraine)
    2024/10/17

In today's episode, we are thrilled to feature an exceptional leader from Eastern Europe, Oleksandra Fomin. Oleksandra has built a dynamic career spanning sales, investment, resort management, metal manufacturing solutions, and sustainability consulting. Her passion for creating a positive impact drove her to pivot into the field of sustainability, where she took on the role of Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Greenbin and when she co-founded the Sustainable Agen. This boutique consulting firm empowers businesses to create and publish meaningful sustainability reports.

We're honored to have Oleksandra join us, especially as we dive into one of the most complex and often controversial topics this season: mining in the Global South. This sector generates wealth and resources but leaves behind environmental damage, social conflicts, and inequality. Today, we'll explore the far-reaching impacts of mineral extraction, resource mismanagement, peace, planet, and the opportunities for change.

Oleksandra provided her expert insights on several key issues concerning Ukraine's natural resources and their broader implications. She discussed the significance of these resources to Ukraine's economy, highlighting their strategic value. She also addressed the detrimental impact of corruption in the natural resource sector, explaining how it affects the environment and local communities, and identified steps to improve transparency. Additionally, she elaborated on how the 2022 war disrupted the state of natural resources, detailing the current situation and the involvement of Western countries, China, and Russia, and the implications for global power dynamics.
