Many are bringing their home-grown love of rugby with them, and clubs in country NSW and Queensland in Australia say they're breathing new life into the sport's grassroots. In the Taralga Tigers' case, a club in a small bush town 200Km south of Sydney, players from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and Papua New Guinea have saved the club. In Boxing: Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, plans to cut pay-per-view prices for his “Riyadh Season” boxing events, to encourage wider interest in the sport. His new pricing strategy begins with the World Light Heavyweight Champions fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol on 12 October in Riyadh, priced at £15 in the United Kingdom, and available for free on ESPN+ for US subscribers. For the most part, major fights in the US cost US$70 – US$90 on PPV. In Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler crowned his remarkable season with a four-stroke win at The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sunday. With it, the American snagged the FedEx Cup bonus of US$25Million. Scheffler is the first player to win seven PGA Tour events in a year since Tiger Woods in 2007 and his remarkable season also included a Masters win, and an Olympic gold medal in Paris. In SportsBiz: A bidding war which lasted more than six hours, finally ended with Babe Ruth’s “called shot” jersey from the 1932 World Series, recently selling at auction for US$24Million, making it the world’s most valuable sports collectible, according to Heritage Auctions. The previous record for a piece of sports memorabilia was a Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card that sold for $12.6M. And that’s a wrap peeps! Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 51 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Thursday morning 22 August 2024. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent, where it is a warm 22 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning. In Rugby Union: Fiji holds a slight edge in their Pacific Nations Cup encounters against Manu Samoa, having won 9 of their 15 Tests, compared to Samoa’s 6 wins. The Flying Fijians will be keen to build on their win at Apia Park last year, when they clash in Suva tomorrow night. Josh Lord and Harry Plummer will remain in the All Blacks squad for their Rugby Championship tour of South Africa as the injury struggles continue for Blues pair Patrick Tuipulotu and Stephen Perofeta. All Blacks medical staff also cleared loose forward Luke Jacobson and prop Ethan de Groot for the tour. And in Rugby League: The 14th rugby league Immortal is legendary Rabbitohs and Roosters forward Ron Coote. Coote won six premierships across the 1960s and 70s, played 148 NSWRFL games for South Sydney and 109 games for Eastern Suburbs. He also played 23 times for Australia, was the recipient of the 1971 Clive Churchill Medal and won three World Cups in 1968, 1970 and 1975. Coote was the NSWRL Player of the Year in 1969, 1970, 1975 and 1977. He also won the 1970 and 1974 Harry Sunderland Medals for the best player of the Ashes series against England. What’s more, his nine grand final appearances came in the space of 11 seasons and he was also the first player to feature in 100 games for two seperate clubs. “I’m a bit taken for words at the moment,” Coote said. “I never thought I’d be crying at 80, but I am. To me it’s just sensational, I never thought it’d happen. “I’ve been at this function a few times and this time I got the gong, so that’s really good to me, I really appreciate it. Thank you.” In Football: Former Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plies his trade with Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia, raked in over 5.8 million subscribers within hours of opening a YouTube account on Wednesday. In UFC: Less than a month before their Las Vegas Sphere event on Mexican Independence Day, one of the main event fighters - Merab Dvalishvili of Georgia has revealed a cut under his eye, which is worrying fans about his availability to take on Sean O’Malley next month. And in Sportsbiz: NBA franchises, as with most major sports teams, have skyrocketed in value over the past decade as league revenue has shot up. The biggest revenue driver has been the media-rights deals, which went from less than US$1Billion per year from 2007 to 2016, to about US$2.7B per year from 2016 to 2025, to what will be around US$7B annually from 2025 to 2036. Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 45 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 21 May 2024. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent. In combat sports: Nobody believes Tyson Fury’s wild claims that he won the fight, especially when you look at the way Usyk had him in BIG trouble in the 9th round. In Rugby: China Women formerly coached by Osea Kolinisau and now coached by Rocky Ali and Uruguay Men were crowned World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024 Champions, and so qualifying for HSBC SVNS promotion-relegation competition in Madrid on 31 May-2 June against the big boys and girls. Argentina, Belgium and Poland join China in the Women’s HSBC SVNS play-off, while Uruguay, Chile, Kenya and Germany qualify for the Men’s competition. Tonga Men were thrashed 42-14 by Hong Kong in their quarterfinal, while Papua New Guinea Men disappeared somewhere. In rugby league: BREAKING NEWS: The Parramatta Eels have sacked Head Coach Brad Arthur after their horror 16-48 loss to a depleted Storm side in Magic Round, but the call was actually made weeks ago and players didn’t even know when it became public yesterday afternoon. The Eels Board attempted to sign Wayne Bennett as a replacement a few weeks ago, but failed to convince Bennett NOT to rejoin South Sydney. In Football: Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool’s fans as the “superpower of world football” after his final match as Manager ended in a 2-0 win at home to Wolves on an emotional day at Anfield on Sunday. The German led the Club to Champions League glory in 2019 — the sixth time they had been crowned European champions. The following season he secured his place as a Liverpool great by winning their first Premier League title for 30 years, the 19th time they had been crowned English champions. He also lifted the FA Cup and won two League Cups in his spell. Liverpool won the League Cup final against Chelsea in February but crashed out of the FA Cup against Manchester United and the Europa League against Atalanta. Their Premier League title bid also faded quickly, but by finishing third Liverpool have qualified for next season’s Champions League. In SportsBiz: A wild and chaotic PGA Championship on and off the course, ended with a dramatic finish Sunday evening as American standout and PGA Tour loyalist Xander Schauffele birdied the final hole to beat LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke. Schauffele takes home US$3.3Million for his first major championship title at Valhalla Golf Club, bringing his total earnings so far in 2024 to just under US$11M. That puts him in second place on the PGA Tour this year, behind only Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who has made more than US$19M on the course. Scheffler finished tied for eighth at the PGA Championship—a solid result considering he nearly missed his second round tee time Friday morning after being arrested following an incident just outside the golf course.
