We’ve discussed Thanksgiving being an antidote to depression but this conversation will address the root causes that lead us down that dark path. Better understanding the root to an issue can expedite the resolution and recovery. 1. Internalized anger Jeremiah-Jeremiah 20:7, Book of Lamentation Ephesians 4:26-27 “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” Ecclesiastes 7:9 “Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.” Anger is never without a reason, but seldom a good one.-Benjamin Franklin Repress vs Suppress: 'Repression' is when someone denies that something exists and tries to hide it, whereas, 'suppression' is when someone acknowledges the presence of something unfavorable and consciously decides to not get involved. Both indicate not wanting to get involved in something. (avoidance) 'Repression' is when your mind hides bad memories without you knowing it, while 'suppression' is when you choose to ignore or forget something on purpose. They are different because one happens automatically, and the other is your choice. 2. Sin & guilt King David-Psalm 51 1 John 1:9“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Peter still “brushed off his shoulders” and preached the day of Pentecost. Confess, Repent, and move on! 3. Distorted thinking & feelings Heman, the Ezrahite-Psalm 88 Philippians 4:8“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Memorize scripture, claim scripture Positive Thinking/Speaking PLUS the Word of God “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” 4. Satanic oppression prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control. mental pressure or distress. The Life of Job James 4:7 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Ephesians 6:11 "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." 5. Taking a prayer burden too personal The Life of Elijah Romans 12:15 "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep."
