  • 58. Listeners on the mic! - Laura's Story
    2021/02/15

During this episode I chat to Laura Shah, a BEAT ambassador who shares her experiences. Laura struggled with anorexia and had an suicide attempt at a young age which was then followed by the suicide of her mothers partner the next day. She shares how she navigated the chaos at that point, how her eating disorder was her only way of controlling it and how it impacted her late teens and early 20s.

Laura talks about the impact of someone stepping up and helping her and accepting that help as well as her experience of therapy as an adolescent and an adult.

She shares her greatest realisation and a bit about the work she does with BEAT - her dog Jess also makes her debut podcast appearance when she crashes our interview.

I really loved speaking to Laura and the way that she is so open, honest and real. It’s been such a pleasure to have her on the podcast and I can’t wait to see what she does next. Thank you Laura

  • 57. Recovery IS Possible with Dr Omara Naseem
    2020/12/21
This week I chat to Dr Omara Naseem, Psychologist & Eating Disorder SpecialistWe talk about what an eating disorder looks like and how they’re diagnosed. We also discuss the BBC Documentary that you may recognise Omara from Freddie Flintoff: Living with Bulimia, my reaction to it as someone who lived with bulimia for a long time, Omara’s thoughts on it as well as why this programme was so important despite some of the backlash online. We also talk about the prevalence of disordered eating in wider society including in the fitness industry where “cheat days” and fasting are encouraged in men and women. The barriers to seeking help for those from ethnic minorities as well as some of the recent inquests into the services and why it is something to be welcomed as it will help the NHS to get more investment into eating disorder services.Over the last year we’ve all had to adapt in many ways and treatment has also had to do so too In order to keep up with the demand that covid has put on us; feelings of food scarcity, pressures and relapsing due to lack of control and emotional upheaval. We talk about what you can do if you’re concerned about your own mental health or eating patterns and how you can support others who you are starting to worry about. You can find Dr Omara on Instagram @dr_omara_naseem https://www.instagram.com/dr_omara_naseem/and via her website https://omaranaseem.comThe BBC Documentary we discussed; Freddie Flintoff: Living with Bulimia is still available on the iPlayer:https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000n1xxDon't forget to subscribe to TRIBE TALK to get the latest episodes. If this is brand new information for you then this season I’m opening up the conversation to people who may not have a big following but who have a story to share. Over the last 9 months it has become more and more obvious that for us to thrive and live a fulfilled life we need to connect. So my aim with this is for people from all walks of life to come on, have a chat with me and share their experiences of struggle, adversity and the moments that made them. When we listen to these stories something incredible happens: we feel seen, we feel understood and we can find a sense of hope and strength that no matter what we are going through we aren’t alone.

We chat about living with a chronic illness and the Charlie shares how he has found that others have had more understanding of people in his situation due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. He shares the best advice he's received as well as the things that helps him when he's having a difficult day.

  • 053 TRIBE TALK - From Rock Bottom to Racing Across Africa with Steven Crompton
    2020/06/15

This week I am joined by the incredible Steven Crompton.

You may recognise him from season 2 of Channel 4s ‘SAS Who Dares Wins’ but believe me, you’ll remember him for a lot more than that once you’ve listened to this weeks’ podcast.

Steven had a hard childhood and grew up carrying a lot of trauma with him, from a young age he started to take drugs and drink which then led to addiction. He joined the army in his late teens which he believed was the answer to his problems; it provided him with a routine, hard training to complete, a sense of camaraderie and most importantly, a feeling of ‘belonging’ in a family of sorts. However, after he had completed his training and things got quiet he turned to gambling, a £3 bet tuned into thousands of pounds worth of debt and an administrative discharge from the only sense of security that he had found. Within a few months Steven was back on drugs, gambling worse than ever and ended up in prison.

We chat about Steven’s life, his motivation for change and one of the biggest things that helped him on his way to recovery; running. He recently embarked on an extreme endurance challenge; running the width of Africa - seriously! I’m not making it up! Listen to what he has to say about running 35 miles or more a day, how COVID-19 got in the way and also what animal he’d most likely to get eaten by all for a worthy cause!

Steven is now the founder of Challenge Child Poverty, a charity that helps children who are experiencing the devastating realities of poverty. Following a volunteering trip to Uganda in the first few years of his own recovery, he was shocked to witness extreme levels of child poverty. He felt compelled to do something to make a difference, and using his love of running, created a charity which combines sporting challenges and targeted fundraising.

This is a conversation not to miss, Steven is positive, inspiring and a general legend.

Find out more about Challenge Child Poverty on their website - get involved by joining in with their fundraising efforts or just donate to support a brilliant cause.

  • 052 TRIBE TALK - Making The Most Of Your Mindset with Jack Revell
    2020/06/08

This week I am joined by Jack Revell, a mindset life coach and one of life’s ‘go getters’.

We talk about how Jack went from modelling to coaching and the companies that he created in between. What he has learnt from hard work, determination and a lot of self development.

Lockdown has caused us all to pause. Some of us have woken up and found that our businesses have disappeared overnight, our source of income dried up or our jobs are now uncertain. We talk about the tools that can help you to feel safe and structured in an uncertain world and see this pandemic as an opportunity, and one that we can make the most of.

How can we see what this pandemic has given us instead of what it has taken away?

Did you start off with good intentions and now feel like your motivation is lacking?

Are you getting in your own way?

Jack’s here on TRIBE TALK to answer all of the above.

Jack runs IG lives and talks to people about a whole range of topics from mindset to business to mental health and more. Make sure to follow him on Instagram @jackwrevell or head to his Website
