  • Episode 44 - Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
    2024/09/17

For this episode, we read Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata. John Powers of NPR said, “One pleasure of this book is her detailed portrait of how such a place [a convenience store] actually works. Yet the book's true brilliance lies in Murata's way of subverting our expectations. It's not simply that Keiko finds liberation, even happiness, by becoming a cog in the capitalist machine, an unsettling idea when you think about it. Murata also makes us see how the family members who find her love of the store's rituals strange are themselves trapped within a set of rules - dress this way, don't talk like that, get married and have kids. But unlike her, they—and maybe we—don't know it.” Korey says, “There is a lot of overlap of ideas and themes in all three of the things of hers that we’ve read.” Ashley says, “Yes, it’s like she’s trying to get something across… a point.” Tune in to our latest episode now! 🧠 🍙

In our latest episode of The ADHD Book Club Podcast, we’re discussing Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Beejay Silcox of Times Literary Supplement said, “The page-turning thrill of Piranesi is watching him puzzle out what we can already see, and guilelessly wander into danger ... Some books arrive dusted with the shimmer of literary myth. Piranesi is one of them..” Ashley says, “If you are into ISpy allusions, then you will like Piranesi.” Korey says, “Yeah, look, if you like reading a name and knowing that it has some meaning and then looking that up like a fucking nerd, then go for it. Read this book.” Tune in to hear more now! 🧠

  • Episode 41 - What Do We Know About Alien Abduction? by Kirsten Mayer
    2024/08/06

ALIEN ABDUCTION AUGUST HAS BEGUN! We’re kicking it off with What Do We Know About Alien Abduction? by Kirsten Mayer. This book may be intended for kids, but it’s a great overview of all things alien abduction! Plus, it’s got some super fun illustrations (we suggest this one as an eyeball book). Ashley says, “I liked this just giving you, kind of, all the facts of what they know, but still being like… but we don’t know, it could be anything.” Korey says, “This is the book, like, if you want a good little overview of alien abduction shit, this is good. This is great.” 🧠 👽
