  • #33. How the Improv Comedy Framework “Yes, And” Can Help You Play Better Golf
    2024/09/19

Aside from the comedy you gain watching your buddy repeatedly shank his tee shot into the water (he’ll eventually get it, right!?), you and I can both learn a lot about the art of comedy when it comes to improving our golf game.

Specifically, from the improv framework, “yes, and,” which fosters acceptance, creativity, open-mindedness, collaboration, and focus.

In today’s episode, you’ll learn how and why you should adapt the “yes, and” framework on the golf course to find more resiliency, acceptance, presence, and enjoyment during your rounds.

    Start listening.

The Art and Science of Acceptance (Newsletter)

    Key Points:

    • The 'Yes, And' framework fosters creativity and acceptance.
    • Acceptance is crucial in both comedy and golf.
    • Building off mistakes can lead to better outcomes.
    • Collaboration with the course enhances performance.
    • Staying present allows for better focus and execution.
    • Every shot is an opportunity to reset and refocus.
    • Mistakes are learning opportunities, not failures.
    • A positive mindset can change the course of a game.
    • Emotional resilience is key to playing well.
    • Enjoying the game is as important as performance.

    Key Quotes:

    • “I want to discuss how yes and the framework that allows creativity, novelty, excitement and damn good humor to flourish in the comedic realm. The same framework can allow you to infuse a sense of passionate acceptance and presence in the moment after hitting a poor shot or making a mistake to ultimately help prepare yourself.”
    • “There's a deep, strong element of acceptance. This means agreeing with whatever premise or scenario is presented. And again, this might be by another comedian, an audience member, or just the situation you and that comedian are building off of. The idea here is to embrace whatever comes up instead of rejecting or blocking it.”
    • “You are going to hit so many great shots in your life that still don't land or go where you intended. It might be a bad bounce. It might lead to an unfortunate lie. You have to remain present, accepting, and adaptable.”

    2024/09/17

    In today’s episode, I’ll recap…

    • The long-term benefit one of my clients has experienced since our initial call in early 2024 (his handicap has dropped from 5.7 to 2.1 this year)
    • Shooting my lowest score of the year…
    • …and having the most number of putts during the round
    • What continues to sabotage my score and hold me back from breaking 90
    • What I’m specifically working on this week
    • Why I feel this coming weekend is the round I break 90…

    Start listening.

    Also, here's a heads-up: I updated my Instagram tag to @thegolfhypnotherapist.

    Key Points:

    • Mindset coaching can lead to significant improvements in performance.
    • Staying present and aware is crucial for making better decisions on the course.
    • Practicing visualization techniques can enhance focus and confidence.
    • Having a solid warmup routine is essential for optimal performance.
    • It's important to analyze both successes and failures to learn and grow.
    • Adjusting your grip can impact your putting performance significantly.
    • Consistency in practice leads to better results over time.
    • Setting realistic goals helps maintain motivation and focus.
    • Embracing the process is key to enjoying the game of golf.

    Key Quotes:

    • “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.”
    • “Could this be the weekend I keep the ball in bounds, putt confidently, take it one shot at a time, shot at a time, emotionally reset, refocus and regroup between every hole and play to my potential? Could this be the defining weekend where I break 90, I go low, I rack up five pars in one string of nine holes? I don't know, stay tuned.”
    • “We're out of bounds. Are you starting to notice the theme here? We're out of bounds again on 15. We end up with a double bogey on five, bringing us to the par three, 16. Boom, we hit the green in regulation again. This is a big talking point of today's episode.”
    • “I feel like I took three steps back in my swing. I felt like I couldn't hit the golf ball to save my life. I'm inconsistent, I'm overthinking. I wanna just regress back to what worked for me three days ago that I felt so confident about. And now I'm inviting in all of these swing thoughts.”

Consistency is key for golfers looking to break 100. Eliminating big numbers and focusing on reducing penalty shots can lead to significant improvement. To break 90, golfers should work on their approach shots and aim for consistent distance control. Being able to get close to the green and give themselves a chance to make par or bogey is crucial.Breaking 80 requires hitting more greens and having a solid short game. Golfers should aim to make more pars and reduce the number of putts.Becoming a scratch golfer involves paying attention to the details and making good decisions on the course. Strategy and course management become more important at this level.Playing in tournaments requires practicing under pressure and being familiar with the rules. Many golfers struggle in tournaments because they are not used to playing with the same level of pressure and adherence to rules.
