The Story of Hunting

  • サマリー

  • Stories are essential. They’re uniquely human. A wolf doesn’t learn to hunt from stories of his elders chasing down a mystical elk that grows bigger with each new telling. But humans do. If you were able to travel back in time, say to the end of the last ice age, and sit around campfire with a group of hunters in North America, you might just get the chance to eat some roasted camel hump (yes, there were camels in North America then). Or wild horse. Maybe even a wooly mammoth. But, regardless of what you would have eaten, you would have heard the story of how the hunt went down. It’s their version of sitting on the tailgate with your friends and your dogs, laughing about how many birds you missed that day. Or listening to your grandpa recount his hunting greatest hits on your way to your first deer camp. Stories and hunting go hand in hand, and so Northwoods Collective is pleased to introduce a new serialized podcast called The Story of Hunting, hosted and narrated by Justin Spencer. The Story of Hunting will work its way through classic sporting literature, both on a chapter-by-chapter as well as a curated basis. We aim to bring the timeless words of authors like Teddy Roosevelt, Aldo Leopold, and George Grinnell to a fresh audience of modern sportsmen and women. Welcome to The Story of Hunting.

  • Good Hunting Part 1 by Theodore Roosevelt
    2021/03/30

Originally published as a series of essays in Harper's Round Table in 1897, Good Hunting is Theodore Roosevelt's attempt at bringing the wonder of America's public lands and animals to the children of the country. The late 1800s were a period of extraordinary change in the west. The vast herds of animals that once covered the plains and mountains of the western US were nearly gone. Settlers had moved into the country's nooks and crannies, and the frontier had moved along with them into Alaska. One of the fathers of the conservation movement, Roosevelt shows us what this beautiful country could have easily lost, and he awakens in us an appreciation for it that is the foundation for keeping it for generations to come.
