    2024/11/15

    Hey Fellow Dads,

Have you ever wondered if you’re providing enough for your family? What kind of provider is God for us, and how should we illustrate Him in the way we provide for our wives and children? What pitfalls do we need to be careful to avoid? Join us as my friend Daniel shares how we need to provide for our children in more than just financial ways, and gives some great book recommendations to help us partner with God in providing for our families.

    • “We know that God doesn’t always give us everything we want, but He does give us everything that we need.”
    • “When they can’t trust the men in their life, they’re more hesitant to trust God.”
    • “Give your children the provision they need and let them learn to be thankful with that….Teach your children to be thankful and accept the provision that is given to them.”
    • “That budget—you gotta know where your money’s going!….You really got to be intentional with your money. If you’re not, it’s going to control you instead of you controlling it.”
    • “I have to remember that in some ways, that financial provision…it could almost be one of the least important things. If all I’m doing is providing for my family financially—that’s not the most important thing.”
    • “Our time is so short with our kids.”
    • “You need to be okay with repeating yourself to your children, because God does it to us.”
    • “Don’t assume your wife is giving all the spiritual things your kids need throughout the day while you’re gone at work. Make a plan for that. Figure that out and talk to her about how you’re going to make that happen.”
    • “What is precious?”
    • “Keep the perspective of what is important. Don’t let the culture around you dictate what is important and how you think.”
    • “Teach your children to think.”

  • 51 | Dads, Protect Your Family
    2024/11/10

    Hey Fellow Dads,

Do we really have a Scriptural mandate as fathers to protect our families, or is that just a Western cultural idea? How does ego play in? What if we’re not naturally strong or tough? What do we need to keep in mind as we learn to be protectors? What books can help? Listen in as my brother-in-law Pete, a very experienced protector, shares helpful principles for protecting our families both physically and spiritually.

    Nathan

    Insights

When Christ “gave himself” for the church, the word implies hazarding his life. Protecting others may involve risking our own lives.

Most important skills we need as men to protect our families:

    1. Fitness—spiritual, emotional, and physical.
    2. Fellowship—with the Holy Spirit, with other likeminded dads.
    3. Fight—learn how to effectively use controlled violence to protect your family.
    Books Mentioned by Pete

    📖 The Bible

📖 Left of Bang: How the Marine Corps’ Combat Hunter Program Can Save Your Life, by Patrick Van Horne and Jason A. Riley

📖 Strong’s Concordance, by James Strong

📖 Morning and Evening, by Charles Haddon Spurgeon

📖 The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis

    📖 A blank journal

    1. Seek God’s direction.

    3. Seek God’s help in living it out.

    Thoughts to consider
    • If you had only a few minutes to speak to the ones you love, what message would you give them?
    • What principle guides your life?
    • Do your wife and children know what your life message is and are they watching you live it out?

  • 046 | Engrave the Gospel into Their Hearts
    2024/08/21
Hi, Fellow Dads, A few weeks ago, something special happened in Washington, D.C.—and it’s probably not what you’re thinking! A new statue was unveiled in the Capitol, engraved with a most unusual title: Preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If someone were to make a statue of you, Dad, could they put the same title on it? Should they be able to? What is the gospel, anyway—and what books can help us and our families ground our lives in it? Nathan Seven Words Concerning the Gospel (with Scripture references) The Gospel has a Source—and that Source is God. Rom.1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, The Gospel is found in the Scriptures—foretold in the OT and fulfilled in the NT. Rom.1:2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) The Gospel has a Subject—and that is God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Rom.1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; The Gospel has a specific Substance—and that is the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Rom.1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: Rom.5:6 ¶ For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Rom.5:8-10 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Rom.10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 1 Cor.15:3-4 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: The Gospel brings Salvation—to those who believe it. Rom.1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. The Gospel is the Standard—it’s the standard for how God will judge individual sinners in the day of judgment—those who refused to believe the gospel (or believed another gospel), will be condemned to eternity in the lake of fire. Rom.2:12, 16 12 ¶ For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. The Gospel is our Stewardship—God has placed it in our hands to be used properly. Rom.1:16a For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: Rom.2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Rom.16:25 ¶ Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, Quotes “When a sinner believes the gospel of Christ, God does the saving!”—NC Books—instruction in the gospel (written for children) The Lamb, by John Cross, published by GoodSeed International(written for children) The Big Picture Story Bible, by David Helm(Illustrated Bible story book with a salvation message) The Prisoners, the Earthquake and the Midnight Song, by Trillia Newbell(appropriate for teens through adults) One Second After You…, by Mark Cahill(written for adults but appropriate for teens) Ultimate Questions, by John Blanchard, published by Evangelical Press Books—illustrations of the gospel in biographical format Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret, by Dr. and Mrs. Howard TaylorGod of the Aurora, by Bruce HamiltonNot the Righteous, by Jack Odell (Probably not appropriate for younger children, as it deals with some gritty details, but it may be suitable for older teens and will certainly inspire you with the wonder of what the Lord Jesus Christ can do when He steps into a sinner’s life and saves him.) • 045 | Every Dad a…What?!—Guest, Darin Kelsey
    2024/08/11
Hi, Fellow Dads, Every Christian dad has been appointed by God to be the shepherd of his own home. Does that thought overwhelm you as it does me? But God hasn’t left us alone in this! He has given us wise counsellors to walk alongside and share the wisdom and experience He’s given them. Join us today to hear from one of those wise counsellors—our guest, Pastor Darin Kelsey—as he shares some tips that helped him lead his children to love the Lord, and of course some book recommendations as well! Learning to Look Up, Nathan Quotes “First and foremost is our own relationship with Christ. We have to be the real Christian.”“Sometimes we fail, and we have to acknowledge that before those we love. When we are concerned about matters that are hard to address, we still have to address those. We can’t just think it’s going to go away or vanish in some mystical way. Forgiveness has to be sought when necessary.”Thanksgivings have to be given. Recognition of people’s accomplishments.“It’s not just a matter that they do or respond or act in a certain way, or act in ways that please me, but that their heart is tuned to that also….It’s not just a matter of trying to compel someone to do right, as much as it is even in their heart and mind to think and concern themselves right.”Guide your children through loss to teach them what’s truly valuable—the preciousness of life.“We would require all of our children to go to another realm of the world. We would take them on missions trips so that they could see a God who is much greater than just our house or our church….From our perspective, that was a great growing up moment for our children.”“We would take time and actually have family devotions regularly….Saturdays were a unique gatherings for our family—we would sing….So I’ve often encouraged fathers to take those times and spend it in God’s word together, pray together, talk together.”“Some of the counsel I’ve even given for the pre-marital couples is…if you play together and pray together, sometimes you’ll stay together!....We would camp together,…we had the special times when we were away from electricity, surviving on the land, those were memorable times.”“One of the reasons we were tighter knit is that we homeschooled….and so the church became our social connection, versus the school, and so that was a great help, encouraging our children to relate with adults, and other people older than them, not just their age…”“Most of our education—even in our own lives—is learned as we live. And so if we can establish the way to learn or the means of information, much of the growing will be done during their living versus just those primary years.”“Nothing can replace the Scriptures….I can’t step away from that at all. That is by far the greatest resource I have besides God Himself.”“When we do have the encouragement from the practice of our family, it definitely stimulates that to continue….Some of this, you allow the grace of God to grow a life—not without influence, but so that they mature at the same time when they realize, ‘You know, I need to make these decisions.’ You’ll make the decision for them, many times, growing up, but eventually it has to be theirs.”“I as a dad, and you, gentlemen, as you live, are going to find that you don’t know everything, and you don’t understand all the aspects of God. And that’s okay. He knows Himself, and we can trust Him.”Books & Authors The Scriptures (The Holy Bible)We Two Alone: Attack and Rescue in the Congo, by Ruth HegeA survival manualSpurgeon’s sermonsWalking With the Giants, by Warren WiersbeSchaeffer’s TheologyCharles Ryrie If you enjoyed this episode, 💡 See the show notes at https://refreshpublishing.com/045-every-dad-a-what 🎙️Please subscribe to the podcast so you can listen again next week! ✍🏻 Leaving a review is the best way to say "thanks" so that others can find the podcast, too!
