The warning to the church at Sardis was to be vigilant in their faith and resist complacency. We too need to heed this warning and recognize that we are stewards for Christ's sake. The church at Thyatira was lured away by a group of people, typified by Jezebel of the Old Testament. They appointed themselves as the “oracles of God” and perverted the true message, luring people away from fidelity towards God to something that is offered and acceptable in the world, but not to God. Small churches will always face the same danger. Continuing to explore the modern significance of the seven churches of Asia beyond their representation as church ages, we consider the church in Smyrna. Despite the crushing pressure and destitution, this church was spiritually rich. As with myrrh, Smyrna pertains to preparation for death. Christ, who died and is alive again, encourages us with the promise of resurrection: if we are faithful unto death, we are promised a victor’s crown and to not suffer the second death in the lake of fire.
