  • How do we talk about science and knowledge?
    2021/12/06

In a rapidly changing world, the role of the scientist is changing too. The domain of science was once thought to be filled with dispassionate observers, conducting research, and drawing conclusions based on evidence. In the current climate of uncertainty, many are now becoming vocal advocates for action, and championing the need for community participation.

Join Nick Ishmael-Perkins as he discusses values within science and how working with traditional narratives and indigenous knowledge can make science more inclusive. Nick is joined by science blogger, Yvette d’Entremont, also known as “SciBabe”, and Genner Llanes-Ortiz, a Mayan scholar and anthropologist.

  • How do we talk about science and distrust?
    2021/11/30

Historically, the pursuit of science has been closely linked to wealth, opportunity, and privilege. How strong is this perception today in seeding distrust and disbelief? And can it be shifted in order to communicate the science more effectively?

In this episode Nick Ishmael-Perkins explores how competing narratives can make explaining science an often difficult and complicated task. Nick is joined by Professor Tawana Kupe, vice chancellor of University of Pretoria, and Kamila Navarro, science communicator.
