  • Episode 42 - Weather Modification
    2024/04/12
In one of their more scientifically strange podcasts, Carter and Mike discuss the alteration of weather and weather patterns by human action. Going back to the 1940’s, originally conceived by the military in an effort to gain an advantage in WWII, it was a hot topic for some time, consuming vast amounts of resources and scientific attention. While the overall focus has waned in recent years, a recent widespread news story of scientists test firing a cloud device over American soil in an attempt to block sunlight informs us that this topic is always in the background.

    2024/04/07
EPISODE 41 - Bias in Today’s World Carter and Mike tackle bias in today’s world in the most recent Why Not Us Podcast. The discussion begins with opposing views of bias in policing, based on a paper written by the now controversial Harvard economist Roland Fryer. The subsequent reaction to his research, and the research done to counter his claims, have upended typical narratives in our highly partisan world. The guys take it further by discussing how data and research is continually manipulated to lend credence to one side or the other. Lastly, a discussion of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) gives you the listener a tool to test yourself and to learn more about implicit bias.

  • Episode 40 - Cell Phone Tracking
    2024/03/29
In our most recent Podcast, Mike relays a recent experience while traveling that is almost unbelievable, yet Carter’s experience in business explains it. The data industry is so far reaching nothing is off limits these days. The protection and safety measures are no doubt important, however the positioning, the tracking and the sheer amount of data is scary, and the fact that everyday people’s data has become such a desired commodity means privacy is all but gone. How many times do you read the Terms and Conditions when you purchase a cell phone or a new device?

    2024/03/22
Carter and Mike dive into the recent reporting and Congressional inquiries into major banking institutions being asked and subsequently providing the federal government with consumer transaction data. Using certain search terms and transactions of certain types, using different back channels, the government leaned on banking institutions to target Americans unfairly. The pattern of financial surveillance uncovered in the reports raise serious concerns about federal law enforcement's and financial institutions' commitment to respecting Americans' privacy rights and fundamental civil liberties.

  • Episode 35 - Electric Vehicle Production
    2024/02/23
In the first of a series of election 2024 podcasts, Carter and Mike talk about the candidates and events leading up to November 2024. The majority of this episode is centered on the presidential election, most likely pitting Biden vs. Trump, the same unwelcome choices we had last time in 2020. The discussion talks through this soap opera that is our political landscape, how the establishment is trying to take down Trump in one way or another, and how Biden is not fit for another term. This first in a series is short, entertaining, informative and compels the listener to begin their own research on candidates that impact their everyday lives.
