According to Luke, these messages from God are heard by Zacharias and Elisabeth regarding the birth of their son John the Baptist even before Mary heard Gabriel’s message to her about the birth of her son Christ Jesus. In Matthew we read that Joseph was also the recipient of God’s angel messages not only to accept Mary as his wife despite her pregnant state, but also as warnings to protect the child from King Herod.
