    Matthew Carlos Stehney is a Ph.D. student in the department of history at the University of Michigan where he focuses on the economic history of the United States. Currently studying historical iterations of Black capitalism, Matthew is interested in alternative economic ideas and practices that sought to produce collective community benefits under a free market system.


    In this episode, he traces the development of modern capitalism from its origins several hundred years ago in Europe.


    He also discusses how we can use history to deconstruct current paradigms and imagine a more just, equitable, and democratic future.
