  • Grading NBA news & alternative over/unders with Jake Fischer | Devine Intervention
    2024/09/18

You asked for it and here it is! No Cap Room co-host Jake Fischer finally joins Dan Devine on a very special episode of Devine Intervention.

(05:00) - NBA City Edition jerseys

(07:20) - Playing “Does this matter?” with offseason NBA news

    (15:45) - Alternative over/unders for 2024-25 NBA season

    (39:00) - The Closing Five

    (57:30) - Recommendations & goodbye

On a very special episode of Devine Intervention, Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter (and co-host of No Cap Room) Jake Fischer. It’s the payoff to what he, and what many of the listeners, have been asking for!

The guys start by going through three NBA news stories and asking “Does this matter?” Does it matter that the Cavs extended Isaac Okoro? Does it matter that the Kings are bringing in veteran wings for a workout? Does it matter that the Knicks signed Marcus Morris Sr. and Landry Shamet to non-guaranteed contracts?

After that, the guys play the same game they played last year on No Cap Room, where they come up with alternative over/unders and then place their bets. How much will Cam Thomas score this season? How many games will Lonzo Ball play? Where will the Orlando Magic finish in the standings? We’re taking sides on everything!

Finally, we close out the show with The Closing Five, where we learn about what Jake does away from basketball and how he introduces himself at music festivals, before closing the show with some recommendations.

Then, they guys each give their top 5 players with the most to gain (or lose) in the upcoming NBA season. Find out what is on the line for Jalen Green, Rudy Gobert, Karl Anthony-Towns, Ja Morant, Trae Young, Damian Lillard, Zion Williamson, Julius Randle, Paul George & Jimmy Butler.

  • 6 most intriguing NBA teams heading into the season | No Cap Room
    2024/09/05

Dan Devine is joined by James Herbert from CBS Sports to talk about the 6 teams that they are most curious about heading into the 2024-25 NBA season.

    (02:45) - Houston Rockets

    (14:35) - Indiana Pacers

    (24:35) - Memphis Grizzlies

    (35:10) - Cleveland Cavaliers

    (47:55) - San Antonio Spurs

    (49:50) - Miami Heat

On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine is joined by James Herbert from CBS Sports to talk about the 6 teams that they are most curious about heading into the 2024-25 NBA season.

The guys start by discussing the Houston Rockets, who are overloaded with young talent but looking to get into the playoffs quick. Do they need to make a consolidation trade? Dan is intrigued by the Indiana Pacers, who aren’t talked about like other contenders in the Eastern Conference despite having played in the Eastern Conference Finals last season.

James then picks the Memphis Grizzlies, continuing his theme of Western Conference teams that missed the playoffs last season, and both guys wonder what the actual ceiling is for the Grizzlies with all of their players back and healthy. Dan picks the Cavaliers, who brought back everyone and made a change at head coach to try and get over the hump this season.

James’ final pick is Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs, who he thinks will be transformed by the additions of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes. Dan’s last pick is the Miami Heat, who followed up a disappointing season and playoff showing by doing….not a lot in the offseason, unless you count them refusing to offer Jimmy Butler a contract extension.

  • Anthony Edwards angers NBA legends, WNBA year-end awards & Luka to the Lakers? | Good Word with Goodwill
    2024/08/28

Vincent Goodwill and Isis “Ice” Young talk about Anthony Edwards riling up NBA legends with his comments, favorites for the WNBA year-end awards and an offseason rumor about the Lakers and Luka Doncic.

(01:00) - Anthony Edwards angers NBA legends

    (23:00) - Can the Aces three-peat?

(33:00) - Historic rookie campaigns for Angel Reese & Caitlin Clark

    (39:55) - WNBA Year-End Awards

(50:00) - Lakers interested in Luka Doncic?

On this episode of Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by Yahoo Sports basketball analyst Isis “Ice” Young for a bounce around the quiet NBA and the rollicking WNBA.

The show starts with the comments that Anthony Edwards made about previous generations of NBA players and how they all lacked skill outside of Michael Jordan. Vince tries to give Edwards some grace (Ice does not) but explains how different basketball has become over the last 30 years.

Ice announces that she has a vote for WNBA year-end awards, so we go through each of them and who she would vote for if the season ended today, but not before wondering what is wrong with the Las Vegas Aces lately and if they can still make it a three-peat.

Finally, a wild rumor about the Los Angeles Lakers targeting Luka Doncic to be their superstar once LeBron James retires leads Vinnie and Ice to talk about how they personally want LeBron’s career to end in L.A.

  • Kerr out at Team USA, Zion slims down & our favorite under-the-radar offseason moves | No Cap Room
    2024/08/21

Jake Fischer and Dan Devine talk their way through the late August NBA news cycle and list off their favorite under-the-radar moves from this NBA offseason.

(05:50) - Steve Kerr not returning as Team USA basketball coach

(08:40) - Zion’s weight loss makes waves on social media

(13:10) - Kevin Durant returns to University of Texas against the Spurs

(18:40) - Joe Harris retires from basketball

    (27:05) - Who’s this guy: Guerschon Yabusele

(41:15) - Our favorite under-the-radar NBA offseason moves

On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine talk about all things NBA….and maybe a little bit about Charlie XCX and Love Island.

The guys kick off the show with the news that Steve Kerr is not expected to return as the head coach of Team USA men’s basketball after leading the team to a gold medal in France. All that’s left is deciding if Spoelstra or Tyronn Lue are going to take over.

Zion Williamson looks slimmed down in pictures on social media, which serves as a good reminder of just how great he played in the 2nd half of last season.

Kevin Durant, arguably the greatest player in the history of the University of Texas, will be returning to Austin to play against the San Antonio Spurs in February. Dan explains how good Durant was in his only year in college, while Jake explains why he preferred Greg Oden.

Joe Harris retired from basketball, leading to Jake telling stories about chatting with Joe in the Nets locker room and bumping into Joe around town in Brooklyn. Dan breaks down the numbers that argue that Joe was one of the best 3-point shooters in NBA history.

Guerschon Yabusele was one of the stars of the French team at the Olympics, and he’s been rewarded with a 1-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers could really use a player like Yabusele, which means he could end up closing games for them. Dan tries to come up with comps to explain “Yabu” to people that haven’t seen him play basketball before.

We end the show with our favorite under-the-radar moves of the offseason, bouncing all over the league to do so.

  • Celebrating Team USA, Emirates NBA Cup thoughts & reviewing preseason predictions | No Cap Room
    2024/08/14

Jake Fischer and Dan Devine bid adieu to Team USA and the Paris Olympics, come up with ideas to improve the Emirates NBA Cup and look back at some of their preseason predictions.

(01:50) - Team USA wins gold over France

(05:20) - Steph Curry finally got his Olympic moment

(15:25) - Why didn’t Jayson Tatum play more in Paris?

(29:15) - Wembanyama is worried for his future opponents

(35:45) - Ways to improve the Emirates NBA Cup

(47:15) - Were we right about our preseason predictions?

On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine get to close the book on Team USA, who won gold in men’s basketball while being led by LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry.

Speaking of Curry, he finally got the international basketball moment that had been missing from his career when he scored a combined 60 pts in the final two games of the tournament, including a downpour of three-pointers late to give USA the decisive win over France in the gold medal game.

Jayson Tatum, and many around him, is upset about his diminished role while playing for Team USA in Paris. Dan explains why Tatum had a hard time seeing the floor, while Jake explains why Tatum’s style of play is a bad fit for Steve Kerr’s offense. Will the 2028 team be built around Tatum once the older players retire?

Victor Wembanyama was not happy to have lost the gold medal game to USA, and he said afterwards that he’s learning more and is worried for future opponents…both in the NBA and internationally. Jake explains why he’s excited to see Wemby play with Chris Paul in San Antonio while trying to temper expectations for how high their ceiling is on offense.

The NBA In-Season Tournament has a new name, it’s now the Emirates NBA Cup, and they’ve already released their schedule for the upcoming season. Instead of digging into the matchups, Jake and Dan talk about what they liked from the event last season and ways that it could be improved going forward.

Finally, the guys go back to a podcast they did in October where they made preseason predictions using made-up over/unders, and they check to see who was right and who was wrong.

  • LeBron, Durant & Curry lead Team USA to an Olympic gold medal | Good Word with Goodwill
    2024/08/11

Vincent Goodwill is joined by James Edwards III from The Athletic to recap Team USA beating France to win their 5th straight gold medal for men’s basketball before talking about the future of the team.

(01:40) - USA beats France to win gold medal in men’s basketball

(16:45) - Is Durant the best player in Olympic history?

(22:20) - Is this Team USA better than the ‘Dream Team’?

(28:10) - Will Kerr stick around after facing criticism?

(38:00) - Who will be on Team USA in 2028?

On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by James Edwards III to talk all things Team USA after LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry secured gold with a win over France on Saturday.

The guys talk about everyone that contributed to the win, and reflected on the close game against Serbia that led to this appearance in the gold medal game, including Steph Curry finally finding his 3-point shot and closing out things for the Americans.

With the win, Kevin Durant became the first men’s basketball player in history to win four gold medals. The guys talk about why international basketball fits KD’s game and wonder if he’s the best basketball player in Olympic history.

With so many future Hall of Famers on the roster, it’s only natural to ask if this team is better than the ‘Dream Team’ from the 1992 Olympics or the ‘Redeem Team’ from the 2008 Olympics. The guys stack the rosters against each other to try and find a fair answer.

Vinnie and James agree that Steve Kerr was in a no-win position with this team, which is why he’s faced criticism about his rotations despite an undefeated record, and they wonder if he’ll still be the coach of Team USA during the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

Speaking of, the guys wonder who the team will be built around if LeBron, Curry and Durant are no longer with the team in four years. Is it time for them to center everything around Anthony Edwards?

  • Lauri signs extension, Brunson named Knicks captain & Team USA runs by Brazil | No Cap Room
    2024/08/07

Jake Fischer and Dan Devine recap Team USA’s win over Brazil, preview Thursday’s game against Serbia and go through all of the NBA news they can find.

(01:55) - Team USA blows out Brazil, advances to semifinals

(15:25) - Serbia holds off Australia, advances to face USA

(30:15) - France beats Canada, advances to face Germany

(45:55) - Who will be on Team USA in 2028?

(53:10) - Lauri Markkanen signs 5-yr extension with Jazz

(58:30) - Jonathan Kuminga & Jalen Johnson ask for max contract extensions

(66:40) - Jalen Brunson named captain of the Knicks

(69:40) - Charles Barkley decides against retirement

On this episode of No Cap Room, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Jake Fischer and Yahoo Sports senior NBA writer Dan Devine get together to talk about little NBA basketball and a lot of Olympic basketball.

The guys start off with a recap of USA’s dominant win over Brazil in the quarterfinal round, which has Jake believing that the Lakers could actually be one piece away from championship contention.

They then move on to the other games, including Serbia’s comeback win over Australia and France sending the Canadian team home after benching Rudy Gobert. How will Serbia’s twin-tower rotations work against Team USA? And will Rudy be back to play against a very dangerous German team?

The guys then get into Five Out, where they break down Lauri Markkanen’s contract extension that will keep him in Utah for the foreseeable future, talk about Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Johnson asking their respective teams for max contract extensions, add historical context to Jalen Brunson being named Knicks captain and wonder what Charles Barkley will do at TNT after the NBA is gone.
