Hippias of Elis travels throughout the Greek world practicing and teaching the art of making beautiful speeches. On a rare visit to Athens, he meets Socrates, who questions him about the nature of his art. Socrates is especially curious about how Hippias would define beauty. They agree that beauty makes all beautiful things beautiful, but when Socrates presses him to say precisely what he means, Hippias is unable to deliver such a definition.

En raison de cette stature, et du fait qu'il n'ait jamais laissé d'écrit, on a longtemps cherché dans les œuvres de Platon, de Xénophon, d'Aristophane ou encore d'Aristote, la trace du vrai Socrate, du Socrate historique.

Il reste d'Euripide plus de pièces que d'Eschyle et Sophocle réunis, parce que sa popularité augmentait tandis que la leur déclinait. Il connut un immense succès durant l'époque hellénistique. Connu parmi les écrivains de l'Athènes classique pour sa sympathie sans égale envers toutes les victimes de la société, femmes incluses, ses contemporains l'ont associé à Socrate.

En mettant en scène son maître Socrate, Platon inaugure ce geste intellectuel primordial : s'interroger soi-même, pour mettre en évidence préjugés et erreurs, et comprendre ce qui fait véritablement la morale, la vie en société, la valeur d'une vie humaine. Sans cette interrogation honnête et lucide, il n'y aurait qu'à fonctionner mécaniquement, comme un robot qui ne sait pourquoi il avance.

Socrate : une figure majeure, aux fondements de toute la philosophie occidentale ; une légende bizarre, qu'on ne connaît qu'à travers les récits des autres ; et surtout, un drôle de philosophe. Sa méthode est simple et directe : pour apprendre à l'autre à penser par lui-même, il faut questionner sans cesse, afin de mettre au jour les préjugés, présomptions et contradictions. L'autre est amené par un jeu de questions à découvrir lui-même son erreur, ce qui lui permet enfin d'accueillir la vérité.

Marcus Tullius Cicéron : un des plus grands orateurs n'ayant jamais existé. Ses talents d'avocat lui permirent d'accéder à la magistrature suprême, fonction normalement réservée à la noblesse ; et la seule énergie de ses discours, les "Catilinaires", suffit à déjouer une terrible conjuration qui visait à l'élimination d'une partie de l'élite politique. Cicéron connut la gloire à la suite de cette affaire, avant que sa franche opposition au pouvoir d'Antoine lui coûte la vie en 43 av. J-C.
