When we wrote on the life of St. Teresa in our book Saints and other Powerful Women in the Church, little did we think that we would, some day, be using her visions of heaven, hell, and purgatory to affirm these important truths of our Catholic faith.

The Dogma of Hell explores the basic Catholic doctrine on hell, purposefully awakening in the listener a profound realization of its reality and eternity of horrors. Eminent French theologian Fr. F.X. Schouppe, SJ, author of Purgatory Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints, has written here a similar but much smaller book.

From the Old Testament times until today, St. Michael the Archangel has always powerfully defended and assisted God's people on earth. And who better than he to paint this sorrowful image of Mother and Son? For, St. Luke, of all the Gospel writers, wrote most personally of the Lord in his infancy up to his death on the Cross.

Louis Lallemant (1578 - 1635) was a French Jesuit who entered the order in 1605. He was ordained and taught philosophy at a number of Jesuit colleges until 1622 when he was made master of novices for four years. He then became professor of theology in Paris. In 1628 he was appointed director of tertians, being responsible for the final year of formation for close to 60 Jesuits. After three years at this post he died. Lallemant expected of others what he did personally.

We sometimes believe that the only reason she is not weeping all the time is because she has the Beatific Vision of her Magnificent Son to comfort her. There’s an expression, “You can’t get hurt if you don’t stick your chin out”. She always sticks her chin out. She is always being hurt. If we study the history of the world, in particular the 16th through the 19th centuries, we become alarmingly aware that we’ve hurt Mary very deeply. However, very seldom do we ever hear her complain about the outrages committed against her.

Anscar Vonier, OSB (1875 - 1938), was an abbot of Buckfast Abbey, England (1906 - 1938). He came from a large family, where his father was a farmer, who also ran a brickwork. After a number of years, the family moved to Rissegg, where Martin attended a nearby school and became an altar boy. In 1882, monks who had been exiled from France purchased the site of a former monastery in Devon. In 1888, Vonier was one of the youths who were recruited for the new abbey.

March 25 is the Feast of the Annunciation. On this particular year 1945, it fell on Palm Sunday. This is such an important season in our church. But in those times, during the final days of the war, thoughts were not focused on Palm Sunday, or the Feast of the Annunciation, or even Easter, for that matter. Ida Peerdeman, the woman to whom the virgin Mary chose to come, called it a "hunger winter". Priests would visit private homes, rather than take a chance on Nazi retaliation for trying to perform religious ceremonies, like Mass, especially not in public places, like churches.

His writings have influenced such diverse authors as C.S. Lewis, Marshall McLuhan, and Jorge Luis Borges, and remains a subtle and unseen presence in contemporary Catholic thought. At his funeral, Ronald Knox said "All of this generation has grown up under Chesterton's influence so completely that we do not even know when we are thinking Chesterton."

"Here, then," says St. Alphonsus, "is our heaven on earth - the Most Blessed Sacrament". This book was conceived and written to help us grow in the knowledge and love of God and in appreciation for what he has done for us. Saint Louise de Marillac was born in France, but lost her mother when she was still a child, and then her beloved father when she was 15. She desired to become a nun, but was discouraged by her confessor. So, she was married and had one son. However, Louise soon was nursing her beloved husband through a protracted illness in which he finally died. Louise was lucky to have a wise counselor Francis de Sales.
