Ambrose Bierce est un écrivain et journaliste américain, assez peu connu en France. Il est essentiellement connu comme l'auteur du "Dictionnaire du Diable" et de nouvelles d'humour noir relevant fréquemment du genre fantastique. Bierce a écrit près d'une centaine de nouvelles, très souvent sur la mort de l'individu et son absurdité. Notamment les nouvelles du recueil Morts violentes consacré aux horreurs de la guerre de Sécession.

A pioneer widower, in appearance decades older than his years, dwells in a modest log cabin with a boarded window on the outskirts of Cincinnati, Ohio. Why this window is boarded his neighbors have no knowledge, but the story's narrator, who heard the tale from his grandfather, reveals the secret of the recluse and his mysterious past. Ambrose Bierce, an author famous for his Civil War and horror stories, here masterfully crafts a tale of suspenseful tension only relieved at the very last sentence.

"The Middle Toe of the Right Foot", a ghost story by the writer and Civil War soldier Ambrose Bierce, was first published in The San Francisco Examiner in 1890. A man named Manton had murdered his children, and his wife who lacked the middle toe of her right foot. A decade later, he returns to the area; and having been recognized, is provoked to a duel in the dark, to be held at the scene of the crime. When the time of the duel comes, no antagonist appears, and Manton stands alone in the haunted darkness. The next day, they found his corpse, throttled by terror, crouching in a corner.

This short story is a series of letters from Mary Jane to her friend Irene, whom she excitedly informs of the handsome and charming man she has met. A childhood friend, Raynor, has also appeared and is causing trouble. Mary Anne explains that she and Raynor were part of a trio of childhood friends and that the third had died a while ago...or so she thought.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842 - circa 1914) was a short story writer, journalist, poet, and Civil War veteran. Bierce wrote realistically of the terrible things he had seen in the Civil War in stories like "The Affair at Coulter's Notch", making him a pioneer of the psychological horror story. In this tale, a Captain Coulter leads the way in a fierce battle between Federal and Confederate forces to capture a house. After the battle, a horrible scene is revealed. The theme of "Coulter's Notch" is to question the nature of war and highlight the sacrifice of the individual.
