The future of medicine is both amazing and terrifying. For the first time in human history, individual scientists and clinicians have the power to alter radically ways in which we live that were never before possible. This presentation explores some of the most exciting recent developments in medicine that promise to help us live longer, healthier, more fulfilling lives, ranging from novel reproductive technologies and cutting-edge immunotherapies to the harvesting of big data and the implementation of new systems of information exchange.

Most Americans possess only a hazy understanding of World War I or its significance for the United States. So why not leave it there? Why bother with this history lesson? How the nation responded to the challenge of fighting its first modern war remade America, leading to female suffrage, the modern civil rights movement, the drive to protect civil liberties, new conceptions of military service, and an expanded role for the United States in the world. There are striking parallels between the problems Americans faced a hundred years ago in 1917-18 and the challenges we face now.

As is well known, America's founding political commitments were to democracy and the rule of law. Some have described them as the soul and spirit of our nation. And over the generations, citizens have given their lives to preserve those commitments. But it turns out that their meanings are contested and open to interpretation. This lecture will discuss those contested meanings as they have played out in American history.

The United States is a nation of immigrants, a beacon of hope and liberty peoples around the world have struggled to reach. Yet Americans have not always welcomed new arrivals with open arms. From colonial days to the present, debates over immigration help define who Americans are, what they believe their country has and should be, and reveal most of all each generation's politics and priorities.

Almost no evidence of successful, long-term female leaders exists from the ancient world. Only the female king of Egypt, Hatshepsut, was able to take on formal power for any considerable length of time, and even she had to share power with a male ruler. Given this social reality, how then did Hatshepsut negotiate her leadership role? This lecture will work through the ample evidence for Hatshepsut's reign in an attempt to find the woman behind the statues, monuments, stelae, and obelisks.

In this talk, Dr. Catherine Sanderson breaks down the science of thought and shows how our mindset - or thought pattern - exerts a substantial influence on physical health. Most importantly, this talk ends by giving specific strategies we can all use, no matter our natural tendency, to make minor tweaks in our thoughts and behaviors that will improve the quality and length of our lives.

In this lecture, Professor Kahn will examine the state of health care and biomedical research in the US and around the globe, through the lens of ethics. The lecture will start with some historical context and examples from bioethics, and draw some parallels from the past for the current state of our public discussions on a range of controversial bioethics issues.

Professor Rithmire's lecture explains the past, present, and future of economic interdependence of China and the US, making sense of its role in the global financial crisis of 2008 and the adjustments taking place in its wake.

Amid the heat of a Philadelphia summer in 1787, the delegates of the Constitutional Convention gathered to save a fledgling republic whose very existence was mired in doubt. Now, as the delegates debated the contours of a new frame of government, they were all too aware that if they failed, the people might once again take up arms. At this pivotal moment in history, the delegates drafted a Constitution that endures today as the oldest surviving national charter still in effect anywhere in the world. But what did the framers really mean?

Corporate or organizational culture, the system of informal norms, values, beliefs, expectations, and behaviors operating in an organization, is perhaps the most powerful influence on an organization's strategic direction and the successful achievement of its chosen strategy. In this lecture, we will explore the phenomenon of organizational culture, from its creation in an organization to its evolution, and, most critically, understand how organizations can work with culture to enhance the success of their strategy.

Franklin Roosevelt offered an answer in 1941. Believing the United States had a role to play in the battle against Nazi and fascist aggression already underway in Europe, he called Americans to arms to preserve their very freedoms. Four freedoms, to be exact: freedom of speech, freedom from want, freedom of religion, and freedom from fear.

Longevity: the ambition of kings, super villains, and pretty much all of us who enjoy waking up each morning. It's also become a focus for biotechnology companies interested in making a big impact on healthcare. According to Professor Jill Helms, questions of this magnitude require moonshot thinking and some extreme team science. In this lecture, she will explain how her Stanford group is working to better understand why we age and translating that knowledge into strategies that slow this natural process.
