寛文五年の秋のある日、徳川光圀の元へ、士官を頼むために訪れた五百旗五郎兵衛という浪人がいた。執事の鈴木主税が応対し、銀子を渡して帰そうとしたが、ひどく落胆した五郎兵衛は庭を借りることを願い、そこで腹を切った。五郎兵衛が士官を頼む際に、己の技芸を申し立てず、自分に八つの子があり、その子と共にお役に立ちたい所存だと言っていたことを聞いた光圀は、自身の不明を悟り、五郎兵衛の遺族を探すが、見つからなかった。
　それから十六年後、水戸藩の行列について来ようとする、一人の旅姿の侍が現れるが、捕らえてその目的を糾明しようとしても、素早く逃げてしまう。その侍は五郎兵衛の息子だったのだが、彼の目的は……
