So what is intermittent fasting? It can best be defined simply as alternating periods of eating and not eating. When we eat our levels of insulin automatically get elevated and signal the body to store all excess calories in our fat cells and to burn the glucose from that meal instead. This halts the burning of fat. But then in a fasted phase our insulin levels drop, and our hormones that oppose insulin become elevated and force the body to burn those fat stores. In other words, only when our body is in a fasted phase will it actually burn fat to produce the energy we need.
Whether you fast for eight or 24 hours, once your body enters the fasting phase, you are burning fat. And yes, you even burn fat while you sleep and skipping breakfast is an easy way to keep your body in that phase until later in the afternoon.
