There is no one better qualified than Jared Diamond - renowned expert in the fields of physiology and evolutionary biology and award-winning author - to explain the evolutionary forces that operated on our ancestors to make us sexually different. With wit and a wealth of fascinating examples, he explains how our sexuality has been as crucial as our large brains and upright posture in our rise to human status.

Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. All that we achieve and all that we fail to achieve is the direct result of our own thoughts. “Self-control is strength. Right thought is mastery. Calmness is power.” (James Allen, As a Man Thinketh) As Allen himself describes, “It shows how, in his own thought-world, each man holds the key to every condition, good or bad, that enters into his life, and that, by working patiently and intelligently upon his thoughts, he may remake his life, and transform his circumstances…and it can be carried in the pocket.”

“As you dream,” philosopher and poet James Allen wrote, “so shall you become.” First published in 1903, this seminal self-help classic laid the foundation for today’s mindfulness practices and teachings. One of the first to explore the power of positive thought, Allen illuminated its effect on character, circumstance, health and body, purpose, achievement, ideals, and serenity. The root of Allen’s beliefs? That success, personal fulfillment, and inner peace really are all in your mind.

批評家のレビュー
“A masterly novel. . . .Norwegian Wood bears the unmistakable marks of Murakami’s hand.” (The New York Times Book Review)
“Norwegian Wood . . . not only points to but manifests the author’s genius.” (Chicago Tribune)
“[A] treat . . . Murakami captures the heartbeat of his generation and draws the reader in so completely you mourn when the story is done.” (The Baltimore Sun)
あらすじ・解説
From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore: A magnificent coming-of-age story steeped in nostalgia, “a masterly novel” (The New York Times Book Review) blending the music, the mood, and the ethos that were the sixties with a young man’s hopeless and heroic first love.
Toru, a serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. As Naoko retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman.
Stunning and elegiac, Norwegian Wood first propelled Haruki Murakami into the forefront of the literary scene.

Fried Egg ??
Japanese original word "Tamago-yaki" is not fried egg. Japanese style omlet.
It's casual home cooking dish as well as upper middle class one, like western omlet.
Good japanese omlet is not easy to cook. So point is contrast that Tokyo lowertown girl Midori made authentic Japanese style omlet. That gap is interesting. But, Midori made fried egg? What a disappointing and uninteresting translation.
Murakami himself likes to cook. In his novel, sometimes cooking and dishes create important atmosphere. The translater apparently didn't know Japanese cooking.
Except that, translating is good. Narration excellent.
