    Coaching & Mentoring -What's the Value?

    Coaching and mentoring is made me, you know, probably one of the largest impacts I’ve had in my life, I mean when--I valued--you know, I played lots of sports when I was a kid, and I really valued my sports coaches you know they give me insights about myself, they give insights about the game I was playing and as I learned you know the game was just a microcosm of life. You know, the sport that I played, you know, prepared me well for the life that I had later on because, you know, sports taught me creative problem-solving in teamwork and influence and teaching others and learning that you can get there by yourself, so many good life lessons when I got into the business and when I was struggling the most I hired a business mentor who works with me for five years and I realized my god there’s you know there’s a whole skill here and I learned that you know having somebody look down or look across on what’s going on, I can’t see the whole picture and coaches help me two main things. One, I understand where my blind spots were, and two, there are time machines.

    Discounting - Big Mistake! Part 2

    Hi everyone, Carl Gould here with your #70secondCEO. Just a little over a one minute investment every day for a lifetime of results.

    Whether you’re 1 day in business or you’re 10 years in business or 100 years in business, that’s not the mark of your value. What is your mark of value? How much value are you bringing? What’s the return on investment that your clients are getting by working with you? if you work for an hour and you make 100,000 dollars, well, you can charge ten grand or 20 grand for that hour if you want. So don’t discount your way to market share because what you’ve done is you’ve trained your clientele to pay you that much, and there not all of a sudden gonna just want to hire you--you know, raise their fees and when you go to hire--get new clients you're going to--they’re gonna say “well can I speak to anyone you’ve work with before?” Great! You're gonna send them over to all your discount people,right? So come out right at the gate and charge what you're worth. Now you can have promotions, you can do specials, but you're not--don’t discount, discount is a big mistake.

    One of the big mistakes that early-stage entrepreneurs make is that they try to discount their way to market share and then once they have a critical mass and then like, “okay now I’m gonna start getting paid what I’m worth,” that’s a huge mistake I mean, if you think about it if Richard Branson or Oprah Winfrey decided to start a mentoring program they would not say “hey everyone, I’m thinking of starting a mentoring program, so but I’ve never done it before, never had once so for a special time, I’m gonna only charge half or a third of my rate”, you know yeah any shot when they do that. Here‘s what they would say, and here’s what I would recommend every one of your listeners uses, is when your--if you’re starting or launching your business or you watch the new product or offering, here’s your script okay, your script is; I’m making myself available to the market in a way I’ve never been available before. When I was in the corporate world, you couldn’t hire me unless you wanted to pay me 250 thousand or above, you know. And you don’t need me for all that time, but you would--you couldn’t even hire me if you wanted, so I am now making myself available to the market in a way that I could, or I’m making this product or this service or this access in a way that I’ve never made it available before.

    Use this as honest feedback as to what area of networking or promotion you need to work on, alright? Yeah, maybe explain a little bit more, spend a little bit more time, and get to know the person first personally, okay? And I will get into more techniques and lfl (inaudible) , we thought today we’d start out with the framework here, and you know, cause if you’re doing something that you love, you know, and you're doing things you enjoy or that your at least neutral at and not so bad you know I’m not willing do it. That comes across, and then you’re just more enjoyable to be around, alright? Cause I got to tell you,I mean I do a lot of networking,I built my business around it and those that network can tell the people that are just there to take the box. Oh yeah, I’ve gone, and you know what you do, you net eat, you don’t network. You walk in there, and you get your cup of tea in the corner and a low bite of the muffin, and you find the other person who doesn’t want to be there either. Yeah, this stinks, doesn't it? Yeah yeah, me too--me too, and then you're gone. And we all see you coming, and we all see you going, and if you don’t commit to the group, we’re not gonna commit to you.

    I understand that there’s a common thought that, yeah, but I wanna be too pushy, you know, I don’t want to overexpose myself. I don’t want them to--I don’t want to wear them out. You know I don’t want them to think like oh, here comes Donna again, right? Here comes Connie again; here comes Karen again, okay? I have a general rule of thumb when it comes to marketing in lead generation. If you are boring, do it less. If you are interested, do it more; that's the general rule of thumb. If you’re not sure, if you’re boring or interesting then use this monthly call to get honest feedback from your team and just say, “yeah yeah you now Carl let’s lighten up a little bit,have a little bit of fun,okay I’ll work on that”.     Did you Know Being #2 is OK?

    Position means what position in the marketplace you occupy. Are you the thought leader? Are you the most expensive? Are you in the middle of the road? Are you the value play? None better than the other, but which one are you? Are you a me too? You know coca cola is the thought leader brand leader in the soft drink market, pepsi is a me too company but sometimes being number two is a lot easier compared than being number one. Pepsi, like, I’m happy to be that. Home Depot is the thought leader in home improvement, but Lows is number two, and they’re happy to be that. Let Home Depot take all the risk, do all the market research, and we’re just going to pop at lows right in between two hole depots; we’re good. We take the cramps off the table, and we are the number two home improvement without having to work as hard, advertise as hard, we don’t do anything as hard as Home Depot does. And we just ride that way right in. What's your position in the market? Do is that solidified and is it where it should be.

    Covid was the downward pressure, so whatever pressure covid put on your table,right. It didn't take the leg out, if you have four really strong legs,covid would not have impacted your business go talk to a supermarket they can’t hire fast enough. Go talk to amazon they can’t hire fast enough,okay. There are companies that so as talking to a new company we’re gonna start working with called the drip bar and the drip bar is a compound IV vitamin cocktails that’s delivered directly from a drip bag into your veins for recovery, for immunity boost, for a you know--for a cancer treatments, for a number of other things well guess what if you mix three compounds in at your location you’re technically categorized as a compound pharmacy, you are covid proof, they grew during covid and not to shut down cause it’s all essential and they are compound pharmacy. Compound pharmacies where dims essential country,why? They remain open, they found the lost leg, they solidify the lost leg,okay. We have to find out where is our lost leg and how do we tighten up that lost leg.

    So the question I’m asking today is in these four examples, which of the legs of your business might need some strengthening? And then we'll talk about some ideas about that, right. So now back to the analogy, I’ve got the table legs underneath it, I pull one leg out the table is still okay, I haven’t touched it, I haven’t put any pressure on it, right. It’s like your business, you might have a lost leg but if there’s no external pressure, no force placed on the table, no one would even know and it to all appearances it would be fine. Sports thought they were fine. Hey! look even if the fans can’t come in we don’t need them but all of a sudden pressure came on from up top and what do they find out? They found out they don’t have as good of a relationship with their athletes as they thought cause they fought for months to try to figure out how to re-open, right. Safety was an issue, how we’re getting pay was an issue, they didn't have that locked down.
