This week on Episode 147 we have a very insightful segment that sparks an important conversation mixed with a very fun segment that showcases a special local event right in the heart of Tulsa!
First, Lisa shares a difficult to hear but important podcast segment posted by the Ruderman Family Foundation on their podcast’s new White Papers Segment. One of their goals is to accurately and informatively report cases of people with disabilities being murdered by their caretakers. It is a sensitive topic, but important to cover. This foundation and their intentional research has found shocking and alarming numbers of these instances and expect the victim count to be much higher than reported. Since we, The Hidden Workforce, are a media source amongst being a resource, we want to stand with this initiative that the Ruderman Family Foundation is working to activate which is true transparency, accuracy, professionalism, and credibility within reporting these types of stories and crimes. Disclaimer: There are areas within this segment that are graphic so listener discretion is advised.
Lisa brilliantly segues this discussion into a valuable resource within Oklahoma which is the 2024 Oklahoma Cares’ Oklahoma Family Caregiver Conference. There are resources and respite available here in the state of Oklahoma for caretakers who serve someone who lives with a disability. Admission is free and there are locations state-wide for caretakers of all types to attend.
Then we shift to an uplifting and joyful event that takes place each year in Tulsa speaking with one of our favorite advocates who loves taking to the sky- Erin Strayhorn joins us to share about Challenge Air’s Tulsa Fly Day!
