  • PARENTS: Are you Ready to Dance with the Stars?
    2024/11/11

Hello Super Moms & Dads! Welcome to a MISSION CRITICAL edition of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast!! And if you're wondering if it has to do with the dynamic and often delicate dance of communication, you are right...AGAIN! (Parents are always right, right?!)

In EP 70 we specifically dive into a crucial communication subject that can get a little blurred, messy, and unfortunately hurtful. We're going to focus on the differences between sarcasm and clever wit. It's a bit tricky! In fact, it's more than that when it comes to sarcasm. We believe it is quite "risky" especially in high-stakes situations. While clever wit can be funny and uplifting, sarcasm is a big, fat, dud. It always fizzles and we want the good kind of fireworks to erupt in your parent/teen convos!

Some helpful insights from EP 70 to grab onto:

-Communication is a dynamic dance involving both speaker and listener.

-Sarcasm can often be misinterpreted and is risky in communication.

-Clever wit is more about uplifting and connecting than mocking.

-Tone and delivery significantly affect how messages are perceived.

-Building strong relationships allows for more playful communication.

-Understanding the mood of the audience is crucial for effective humor.

-Intent behind words is key to positive communication.

-Clever wit can lighten the mood and foster connection.

-Engaging the brain before engaging the mouth can prevent misunderstandings!

Chad does a lot of things in his communication system that many coaches do, but he does ONE THING that NOT very many HS coaches do. Chad shares his innovative approach to engaging parents that incorporates a very personal, transparent, in-person conversation. His approach helps everyone involved and has contributed to him creating a team culture that embodies trust and respect that extends beyond the court, the season, and a player's short career. Chad's strategy also helps build teams that win (A LOT) on and off the court!

Listen in as Chad discusses the challenges and successes of navigating coach-parent-player dynamics, the role of honesty in coaching, and the impact of effective communication on young athletes' development and team success!

    Terrific Takeaways

-Why you don't want a "Davis vs. Davis" scenario & how you can stop this!

-Building trust with parents can lead to a more cohesive team environment.

-Honesty is crucial in discussions about player roles and expectations.

-Creating a culture of respect helps in managing parent-player dynamics.

  • Are You Subconsciously Avoiding Challenge?!
    2024/10/14

In today's edition of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast, we will explore the concept of challenge avoidance, particularly how subconscious beliefs can lead us to shy away from challenges. Yikes! Let's don't shrink!! We want to face and embrace challenge, don't we?!

Absolutely (I mean, you did choose parenthood!!), so let's discuss the "the challenge continuum" from childhood to adulthood, and how reframing challenges as opportunities can foster confidence and growth in our teen athletes and performers.

Let's embrace challenges as parents and model this behavior for our kids, because hey, challenge is inevitable!

Some teasers and a few of bright the shining gems in this episode:

    • We perceive 11 million pieces of information every second, but are only consciously aware of 40 to 120.
    • Subconscious avoidance of challenges can lead to negative outcomes in relationships and personal growth.
    • Children are naturally inclined to embrace challenges, but adults often shy away due to fear of judgment.
    • Modeling behavior as parents is crucial in teaching children how to face challenges.
    • Reframing challenges as opportunities can shift perspective and build confidence.
    • Negative self-talk can indicate limiting beliefs that hinder challenge acceptance.
    • Self-awareness is key to understanding one's avoidance of challenges.
    • Asking questions can guide children to see challenges as opportunities for growth.
    • The way we perceive challenges can significantly impact our self-esteem and willingness to engage.
    • Parents should reflect on their own challenge avoidance to better support their children.

  • Parents: How Do We Create Our Own Luck?
    2024/09/30

Hey Parents--here's hoping your lucky streak continues! If you didn't check out Episode 63: "Do Your Teens Feel Unlucky?", we suggest you give that a listen before you digest this one.

In that episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast, we tackled the concept of luck based on some ideas from a book titled: "Conscious Luck: 8 Secrets to Change Your Fortune."

Here are a few lucky horseshoes we'll toss around in today's show:

    • Luck is the advantage gained by taking bold action and executing the correct course of action.
    • "Luck-worthy" goals are those that inspire motivation and stretch your thinking.
    • Mindset plays a crucial role in taking consistent bold action and creating luck--what would happen if you were able to "create your own luck" rather than standing around merely "hoping" to get "lucky?!"
    • The coaching approach to parenting can help teens identify and take bold action towards their "luck-worthy" goals.

    Let's get lucky!!!

  • Parents: Do Your Teens Feel Unlucky?
    2024/09/23

Hey Parents--it's your lucky day!! Oh that was a bad dad joke but please do stick around and maybe your luck, or our luck, will change!

In this episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast, we tackle the fascinating subject of luck based on a few concepts we have gleaned from the following book that believe it or not, impact you AND your teens: "Conscious Luck: 8 Secrets to Change Your Fortune" by Gay Hendricks (he wrote The Big Leap--highly recommended!!) and Carol Kline.

Stay tuned as we hit the following big ideas, keys, or four leaf clovers:

    • Luck is a perspective that we have on events.
    • Labels like 'lucky' or 'unlucky' can limit our ability to see the potential gifts in a situation.
    • Guilt can be a barrier to feeling lucky and deserving good things.
    • Helping teenagers shift their thinking and beliefs can improve their perception of luck.
    • Neutral thinking and considering the potential gifts in every situation can lead to a more positive perspective on luck.

And all of this leads us into Episode 64 next week where we discuss how we can create our own luck. Juicy stuff!
