God, in His wisdom, looks at our hearts rather than stopping at our outward behavior. He’s curious about what motivates us, and as parents, we can reflect that same curiosity when guiding our children.

Proverbs 21:2 reminds us that while a person’s actions may seem right in their own eyes, the Lord examines the heart. Jeremiah 17:10 tells us He searches our hearts, looking beyond surface actions.

This is a framework that invites us, as parents, to mirror God’s patience and depth—to not only discipline our children but to seek the heart behind their actions. This is what we mean by “chasing the why.”

Welcome back to the kitchen table. Bethany shares a guiding principle in her home: inclusion. Rooted in James 2:1, which calls us to show no partiality, Bethany shares how exclusion has no place in her home. Her goal is to raise children who don’t just avoid exclusion but actively work to include others.

Kids naturally want their own space—it's common to hear, “get out of my room” But Bethany encourages her children to look beneath this impulse and ask what’s driving it. Why do they want to exclude? Is it anger, frustration, or something else? These gospel conversations are a way to explore what’s going on in their hearts and to bring those feelings to light.

Building an inclusive family culture takes practice and patience. Bethany teaches her children that while the world often encourages exclusivity, they’re called to be different. Through intentional conversations, ownership, and a commitment to kindness, they’re learning to grow together as a family that values and practices inclusion.
