The enduring image of World War I is of men stuck in muddy trenches, and of vast armies deadlocked in a fight neither could win. It was a war of barbed wire, poison gas, and horrific losses as officers led their troops on mass charges across No Man’s Land and into a hail of bullets. While these impressions are all too true, they hide the fact that trench warfare was dynamic and constantly evolving throughout the war as all armies struggled to find a way to break through the opposing lines.

Imagine a society with no unemployment, zero inflation, free healthcare and education, free childcare, virtually no serious crime, and where women and men are treated with absolute equality. Such a society has existed: in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), popularly known as East Germany.

Europe’s attempts to appease Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, most notably at Munich in 1938, failed, as Nazi Germany swallowed up Austria and Czechoslovakia by 1939. Italy was on the march as well, invading Albania in April of 1939.

Like other totalitarian regimes, the leader of the Nazis kept an iron grip on power in part by making sure nobody else could attain too much of it, leading to purges of high-ranking officials in the Nazi party. Of these purges, the most notorious was the Night of the Long Knives, a purge in the summer of 1934 that came about when Hitler ordered the surprise executions of several dozen leaders of the SA.

Few events have had a greater impact on human history than the ascension to power of the Nazi Party in Germany in January 1933. This was no coup: the party gained some power via democratic elections, although once it was established, it quickly took absolute control over all aspects of the state.

In den frühen 1920er-Jahren bereiste Larissa Reissner das westliche Ausland und fasste ihre Erlebnisse in ausdrucksstarke Reiseberichte zusammen, deren bekanntester "Hamburg auf den Barrikaden" ist.

Unterschiedlicher können zwei Brüder nicht sein: Während Hermann Göring sich Hitler anschließt und in dem mörderischen Regime Karriere macht, verachtet sein Bruder, der Feingeist Albert Göring die Unmenschlichkeit der Nazis. Er hilft Juden bei der Flucht aus Deutschland und unterstützt die tschechische Widerstandsbewegung. Nicht selten unter hohem Risiko und mit waghalsigen Aktionen. 34 Menschen stehen auf der Liste der Geretteten, die Albert bei seiner Verhaftung – immerhin trug er den Namen Göring – seinen amerikanischen Verhöroffizieren vorlegt.

"Es war am 4. November 1937, als wir in Buchenwald ankamen. Ich fühlte mich den anderen gegenüber ein wenig überlegen, denn ich hatte im Jahre 1933 bereits zwei Konzentrationslager (Colditz und Sachsenburg) kennengelernt. Was konnte mir Buchenwald schon Neues bringen. Jedoch das Gefühl der Überlegenheit verlor sich sehr bald, denn die unverwischbaren Eindrücke schon des ersten Tages zeigten, dass das Lager Buchenwald des Jahres 1937 keinen Vergleich mit dem Lager Colditz aus dem Jahre 1933 zuließ.“ (Bruno Apitz).

Alles beginnt mit einer Traumhochzeit: 819 heiratet der Sohn Karls des Großen, Kaiser Ludwig der Fromme, zum zweiten Mal. Mit seiner Braut Judith betritt die Familie der Welfen die historische Bühne. After the Western Roman Empire ended in 476, a host of new, primarily Germanic people inherited Roman lands, wealth, and ideas in Western Europe. The most notable of these were the non-Germanic Huns, but after them came the Gepids, an important but overlooked group. The Gepids were no less bellicose than the other Germanic tribes or the Huns, causing immense destruction throughout Europe and constantly threatening the stability of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Gepids knew how to use the powerful Byzantine Empire to their advantage and to make alliances with other Germanic tribes.

Für uns ist er August. Sachsens großer Kurfürst und Polens Wahlkönig hat verschiedene Namen getragen – je nach der Rolle, die er ausfüllte: Friedrich August I., August II., und nach seinem Tod kam "der Starke" hinzu. Allzu oft gilt der Sachse heute als platter Feier-August. Er ist ein wenig zur Marke geworden, mit der sich werben lässt. Da galt es in dieser Ausgabe von G/Geschichte, tiefer zu graben. Und so wurde der Mann gefunden, der das Glück hatte, mit seinen kulturellen Vorlieben seinem Land den Stempel aufzudrücken.

Historische Vergleiche sind heikel und meist schief. Doch in diesen Fällen sind die Parallelen so frappierend, dass G/Geschichte es wagt, doch einen Vergleich zu ziehen: Zwischen Roms Niederlage in Germanien und dem verlorenen Vietnamkrieg der USA sowie dem Debakel der Sowjetunion und des Westens in Afghanistan. In allen Fällen schickt eine Weltmacht ihre Soldaten in ein Land, das wirtschaftlich und technologisch rückständig ist. Und muss erstaunt feststellen, dass die Einheimischen die fortschrittlichere Zivilisation keineswegs freudig begrüßen.

Otto, Prince of Bismarck, Count of Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of Lauenburg, was a conservative German statesman, diplomat, and author who was born Junker Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck. Bismarck supervised Germany's unification in 1871 and functioned as its first chancellor till 1890, throughout which time he ruled Europe for 20 years.

The Dodecanese Campaign was a British attempt to seize islands in the Aegean during the fall and winter of 1943. The campaign brought Anglo-American relations to their lowest point during the war. The Dodecanese Campaign was the tragic outcome of the fundamental differences of opinion and approach between allies who otherwise worked closely and in harmony, and though nobody knew it at the time, it marked one of the last major victories for German forces who had been forced to retreat in every other theater of operations.

Despite all the accomplishments, widespread victories, and conquests that the ancient Romans accrued over the centuries, one of their most critical failures was the inability to subjugate Germany. Indeed, historians have singled out this one failure as central to the ultimate downfall of Rome, as the constant wars against the Germanic tribes and the need to defend the frontier on the Rhine helped bring the Roman Empire to its knees. There are elements of truth in such a conclusion, but the reality was far more fluid than is often realized.
