En 1476, los habitantes de una aldea andaluza llamada Fuente Ovejuna, hartos de soportar los abusos de su señor, se rebelaron unánimemente contra él. La rebelión acabó en asesinato, pero el pesquisador no pudo arrancar de las bocas de los aldeanos más que una única respuesta: «Fuente Ovejuna lo hizo». Frente a este admirable comportamiento se renunció a continuar la investigación dando por justa la venganza del pueblo. El famoso episodio fue recreado e inmortalizado por Lope siglo y medio después en una obra cuya tensión y fuerza dramática cautiva emocionalmente al lector.

Como tantas otras obras de Lope de Vega, ésta está basada en una canción popular que decía: Que de noche le mataron al caballero la gala de Medina, la flor de Olmedo. Esta tragicomedia tiene su base en un hecho histórico: la muerte de don Juan de Vivero, caballero de Olmedo, a manos de su vecino Miguel Ruíz. Lope refleja de manera sencilla y elegante, los problemas, los anhelos y los ideales del pueblo a través de tres personajes arquetípicos: el galán de nobles valores, la dama de gran belleza y altos sentimientos y el criado del galán, gracioso y a la vez su consejero.

Octavio tiene de dos bellas hijas: Nise y Finea. Y considera que ha llegado el momento de casarlas. Nise es muy inteligente, refinada y discreta, y está enamorada de Laurencio un joven poeta. A Finea que es en apariencia torpe, insegura y, como todos dicen, boba, su tío le ha dado una buena dote, y muy interesado en ésta, Laurencio empieza a pretenderla, aunque su padre con quien quiere que se case realmente su hija es con Liseo.

Puede considerarse como una de las mejores comedias del teatro español del siglo XVII. El personaje central que es la condesa Diana de Belflor, mueve todos los hilos de la acción que tiene lugar entre continuos enredos, engaños y conflictos amorosos que reflejan unas inquietudes sexuales de los protagonistas, que van en contra de las convenciones sociales, la posición y el decoro.

El Caballero de Olmedo es una obra de Lope de Vega escrita seguramente en 1620 y basada, como otras del mismo autor, en una canción popular: "Que de noche le mataron al Caballero, la gala de Medina, la flor de Olmedo". La obra suele clasificarse como una tragedia (o tragicomedia), ya que introduce elementos propios de este género en su tradición clásica, como la presencia de un coro, el desenlace fatal de su protagonista o la temática del destino como fuerza inexorable que se impone a los personajes.

Fuenteovejuna is a play by the Spanish playwright Lope de Vega. First published in Madrid in 1619 as part of Docena Parte de las Comedias de Lope de Vega Carpio, the play is believed to have been written between 1612 and 1614.
