It's an ordinary Thursday lunchtime for Arthur Dent until his house gets demolished. The Earth follows shortly afterwards to make way for a new hyperspace bypass and his best friend has just announced that he's an alien. Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last 15 years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

There is a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. In consequence of a number of stunning catastrophes, Arthur Dent is surprised to find himself living in a hideously miserable cave on prehistoric Earth. However, just as he thinks that things cannot get possibly worse, they suddenly do. He discovers that the Galaxy is not only mind-boggingly big and bewildering but also that most of the things that happen in it are staggeringly unfair.

In 1985, The Observer magazine sent Douglas Adams to Madagascar to look for the exotic and potentially extinct aye-aye lemur. There he met zoologist Mark Carwardine, and together they made a radio pilot about their travels, In Search of the Aye-Aye. This led to a hugely popular radio series, Last Chance to See, later adapted as a best-selling book. Douglas Adams died in 2001, but his friend Stephen Fry took his place for a follow-up 20th anniversary television series, broadcast on BBC Two in 2009.

Stranded on prehistoric Earth, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect find escape in the form of a time-travelling sofa. But as eleven homicidal, bat-wielding robots proceed to blow up Lord’s Cricket Ground, it seems that Arthur is far from Home and Dry. In fact, he is not even Home and Vigorously Towelling Himself. Off. Soon he is on an explosive quest to save the Universe, equipped with only a rabbit bone, a worn dressing gown, and a spaceship which looks remarkably like an Italian bistro.

Ve vesmíru se může stát cokoliv a tak i na odstrkovaného tvora jako je Pozemšťan Arthur Dent čeká jeho hvězdná hodina. Kupříkladu může potkat spřízněnou duši Frenchurch, která své jméno získala podle nádraží, kde ji její nudící se rodiče zplodili ve frontě na lístky. Po osmi zběsilých letech v kosmu se Arthur Dent touží usadit a upřímně doufá, že jej aspoň na nějaký čas nechá Vesmír na pokoji. Zákony života, vesmíru a vůbec surově postrkují Galaxií, tentokrát pro nic menšího, než je záchrana samotného vesmíru. Ano, je znovu čas sbalit ručník, porozhlédnout se po bezpečné skrýši, kam by člověk mohl odložit pud sebezáchovy, a vyrazit. Po tisíciletích ožívá nebezpečí, že poměrně mírumilovný národ s citem pro melodii podlehne svému děsu z jiných vesmírných ras a na druhý pokus se s nimi vypořádá jednou provždy.

Ve druhé části slavné série začínající po skáze planety Země, nejprve bývalý galaktický prezident Zafod Bíblbrox, zkušený vesmírný stopař Ford Prefect, jeho pozemský kamarád Arthur Dent a dívka Trillian jen o vlásek uniknout jisté smrti z pracek tupých Vogonů. Po řadě neuvěřitelných peripetií, zahrnující setkání s absolutním vládcem vesmíru, se cesty přátel opět spojí aby se vydali na cestu časem do nejluxusnější restaurace, jaká kdy existovala či bude existovat.

Praticamente Inofensiva é tão polêmico quanto seu criador. Muitos o consideram o último volume da série O Mochileiro das Galáxias e outros afirmam tratar-se de um título independente, que apenas utiliza os mesmos personagens. Parte dessa controvérsia se deve aos 13 anos que separam este livro da primeira aventura de Arthur Dent, já que Adams iniciou a coleção no final dos anos 1970 e somente em 1992 retomou a história.

Depois de oito anos vagando pelos mais insondáveis cantos da Galáxia, Arthur Dent está de volta à Terra e tudo parece estranhamente normal. Todas as coisas estão em seus devidos lugares–sua casa, seu emprego, seu planeta–e é justamente por isso que ele começa a desconfiar de que ou ficou completamente maluco e tudo não passou de uma grande alucinação ou algo de muito mais estranho do que viagens espaciais a bordo de naves alienígenas poderia estar acontecendo.
