Klara Larsen is one of Denmark's most skilled fire experts. One day she is called out to a case in a small Jutland town. It is the remains of a family's home, and their grief is great. The local police are at a standstill. It turns out that it's not just a house that's burned down; the examination of the fire scene reveals a gruesome crime and a child's disappearance. Klara is desperate to find the child and reveal the truth of this shocking crime.

It is late September, and Anna Kiehl, a student of anthropology and a single mother, does not return from her evening run in the forest. The next morning, she is found dead. She is naked, her throat is cut, and there is a bouquet of poisonous hemlock on her chest. Police inspector Daniel Trokic is in charge of the investigation, and it leads him to the case of a prominent scientist and specialist in neurochemistry and antidepressants who disappeared eight weeks earlier.
