In this episode, we discuss Epicureanism. While yes, they are all about pleasures, it is not always what you are expecting.  We focus mainly on the Tetrapharmakon but also some of the other great quotes by Epicurus. Like this one:

It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely, honorably, and justly, and it is impossible to live wisely and honorably, and justly without living pleasantly. Whenever any one of these is lacking, when, for instance, the man is not able to live wisely, though he lives honorably and justly, it is impossible for him to live a pleasant life.

Here is the link to the show I referenced with Proff. Emily Austin. The podcast is In Search of Wisdom, I have already downloaded a few more episodes to listen to around the house and I am sure it is about to become another of my favorite podcasts.

    2023/03/05

In this episode, we discuss Aristotle’s Poetry. He focuses on tragedy because we lost the comedy sections to history. Many tragedies have occurred throughout human history and in the last couple of years. It is much easier to learn from the tragedies of poems than from our own life.

  • 29 Fear Vs. Mel
    2023/02/11

In this episode, we discuss an Audible Original, Mel Robbins' Take Control of Your Life: How to Silence Fear and Win the Mental Game. Again, I have no affiliation with Mel or Audible, but I love them both. I only bought this audiobook because it was on sale and because it was by Mel Robbins, and I got more than my money's worth!

Here is a link to Mel Robbins’ book on Audible

I did not quote any of these, but I found them all helpful and wanted to share them.  These are all about the Harvard study that Mel and I reference.

  • 27 Burnout
    2023/01/27

In this episode, we talk about the last two months and why it was self-care time! Burnout kicked my ass! I experienced burnout for the first time in my life. It came along with the depression and anxiety that I know so well, but this time the cause was different. I was exhausted and did not even want to do the most basic self-care things I try to do on a daily basis. I, of course, let you know the steps I took to get out of that funk and welcome you to share your loved practices too on the social media page you follow me on.

  • 26 Existential Ethics
    2023/01/21

In this episode, we wrap up our 3-week trek through Ethics. We very briefly mention some basics of Camus’s and Simone de Beauvoir’s ethics, a Heidegger’s lack of ethics. Then spend a second on Kierkegaard’s three stages of life, and spend most of the episode on Nietzsche’s first chapter, On the Genealogy of Moral (after a section or two of Beyond Good and Evil). This chapter in Genealogy is entitled “Good and Bad” “Good and Evil” and is the perfect answer to FlyinLion’s question.

FYI as I start a new semester, the new publish date is probably going to be on Thursday or Friday each week.

  • 25 Right vs. Ought
    2022/11/29

In this episode, we continue our 3-week journey into Ethics. Today we cover Mill’s Utilitarianism and Kant’s Deontology (with nods to David Hume). Mill’s Utilitarianism is all about the “right thing to do in this situation,” and has the catchphrase of “what is right is what brings the most amount of pleasure to the most amount of people over the most amount of time.”  Mill is all about the consequences and Kant is all about the intent. Kant’s Deontological catchphrase is, “you ought to do what any other rational being ought to do in a similar situation.
