  • Episode 19- Nervous Energy: How Over-Achievers can Manage their Anxiety
    2021/10/11

Today we are talking to Lacey Silva, LMSW who found the book Nervous Energy and it changed her life. This book by Dr. Chloe Carmichael speaks to those of us who seem to have it all going right on the outside when we are filled with insecurity on the inside. Lacey never thought of herself as an anxious person. She always considered herself driven and high-achieving, and she is those things. But she also struggled with how to manage doubts and self-criticism. This book gave her a more-accurate view of how she experiences the world as well as everyday strategies for taking control of her anxiety whenever it tries to overwhelm her.

  • Episode 18- Intuitive Eating: It's About More than the Food
    2021/09/20

Today I'm talking to Meredith Renshaw who is a Registered Dietician and Instagram favorite. She works in New Orleans with women and men who want to heal their relationship with food and with their bodies. Intuitive Eating is a favorite book on her self-help bookshelf because at it's core it is a book about compassion and trust. The authors, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resche, recognize that when we are not managing our diet and our health very well, it is a symptom of something bigger. In order to meet our health goals, we have to work on our mental health as well. Can you lose weight with Intuitive Eating? Sure. But you don't have to. And that is because you're the one in charge around here- not the brownie.

  • Episode 16 - The Four Agreements is Simple and Powerful
    2021/06/25

Sometimes life is not as complicated as we make it, and The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz reminds us of that. Today, I'm sharing what resonated with me in this book and how you can apply it to your life. This book is on my bookshelf because small shifts in your perception of your daily life can make huge shifts in the amount of distress you feel each day.

  • Episode 15- Books for Worried Children
    2021/02/10

Today I’m talking about the three latest additions to my kids bookshelf. I chose these books specifically for children who worry. These are wonderful picture books to read to kids who are 10 years old and younger. They are enjoyable simply as stories, or as openings to conversations about worries and how we can adjust our thinking around them.

The links below go to www.Bookshop.org which is an online bookstore that supports local Mom and Pop bookstores in your local area. And when I checked, these books were even cheaper than on Amazon! Woohoo!

    The WhatIfs by Emily Kilgore

Ruby Finds a Worry by Tom Percival

The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes by Gary Rubenstein

  • Episode 13- Finding Your Worth in The Color Purple
    2020/10/31

Alycia was a high school junior who was bored in her sex ed class. She happened to find The Color Purple sitting on a shelf next to her, began reading, and her life was never the same.

The main character, Celie, experienced the worst side of life in the novel. Alycia walked with Celie through her journey and came out of it with a new appreciation of her own worth as a young woman. Alycia had never been a reader, but this book changed that. And since then, she found a love of female-centric literature, as well as a new appreciation for herself as a worthy human being.

Join Alycia on her Civics and Coffee Podcast and on her Facebook Page.
