  • Session 385: Diabetes Digital with Wendy & Jess
    2024/11/13

Many of you in our community are familiar with Wendy and Jess of the Food Heaven podcast, who joined us in 2022 for a conversation about developing a healthy relationship with food. Well, the dynamic duo of BFFs and registered dietician nutritionists are back — this time in honor of National Diabetes Month — to discuss their new platform, Diabetes Digital. Diabetes Digital is an insurance-covered telehealth platform designed to empower individuals to manage and prevent diabetes through 1:1 virtual nutrition counseling. During our conversation, we discussed not just how you might benefit from getting involved with their new platform, but also how to generally manage stress, diet, and lifestyle concerns that may come up after a diabetes or prediabetes diagnosis.

  • Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Own Words w/ Director Nneka Onuorah
    2024/11/08

Last week, Amazon dropped the highly-anticipated documentary Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Own Words, directed by Nneka Onuorah. It’s no secret how much we love Megan over here, and this documentary brilliantly showcases the rise of one of the most charismatic and lovable rappers in the game, while also allowing Megan to be vulnerable in discussions of her mental health after several tragedies.

Today I'm joined by the director, Nneka, to learn more about how she approached the documentary. During our conversation she gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how the film was created, while also discussing what she hopes you’ll take away from the film, especially when it comes to ideas like grief and wellness in the Black community.

  • Session 384: Building a Brand w/ Bea Dixon of The HoneyPot
    2024/11/06

Did you know that November is National Entrepreneurship Month? Being a business owner looks different for everyone, whether you’re a therapist scheduling back to back clients or a candle maker making the candles that leave our homes smelling incredible. In acknowledgment of all the dynamic Black women entrepreneurs in our community, we’ve prepared a series of conversations that provide insight into what it looks like to grow your business while also maintaining a healthy well-being.

This week, I’m joined by Bea Dixon, the founder of plant-based feminine care brand, The HoneyPot. Dixon is 1 of the first 40 women of color to raise one million in venture capital and has been featured in the Today Show, The New York Times, ELLE, ESSENCE and Forbes, to name a few. During our conversation, we discussed the importance of using your intuition when running a business, lessons Bea has learned from controversy, and what the future of the HoneyPot looks like post-acquisition.

  • TBG U Girl Chat: Let's Talk Homecoming
    2024/10/29

Get ready, because class is almost in session. Welcome to the TBG University podcast, tailored for the 20-something who’s packing for a new year on campus, thinking through their gap year, enrolling in a community college, grabbing their stoles for graduation, and everything in between.

The most exciting time of an undergraduate’s school year is almost here ya’ll, and no, we're not talking about Halloween or the end of midterms. It’s almost Homecoming Season! — a time for tailgates, parties, special performances, yard shows, and of course for post-grads, the chance to reconnect with all of your besties from undergrad. When it comes to Homecoming, there’s soooo much to talk about — whether it be the dos and don’ts of networking with alumni, the importance of staying safe when hopping from after party to after party, and even how to afford all of the events that are occurring.

    AFFIRMATIONS

    • Homecoming is meant to be fun! I can use this time to do things that uplift me without worrying about outside stressors.
    • I embrace this opportunity to engage in activities that bring my joy and interact with people who nourish my spirit.
    • I have the agency to tailor my homecoming experience according to my personal desires, even if that means skipping the events my friends are going to.

  • Session 382: What We Know About Alzheimer's
    2024/10/23

The idea of getting older and slowly losing memory of everything and everyone around us is something that can cause lots of dread and anxiety. Beyond the sensationalized depictions in shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, let's explore the real impacts of Alzheimer’s disease and how it can affect our families and loved ones. Joining me for this important conversation is cognitive neuropsychologist and Associate Director of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Dr. Lisa L. Barnes. Dr. Barnes has published over 300 manuscripts, received many NIH grants, and is the Principal Investigator of two longitudinal community-based studies of older African Americans.

During our conversation, we discussed the common symptoms and presentations of Alzheimer’s, the link between Alzheimer’s and traumatic stress, and the importance of including Black folks in clinical trials when studying various medical interventions for Alzheimer’s.

  • Session 381: The Mental Health Benefits of Running
    2024/10/16

They say life is a marathon, not a sprint, so today on the podcast, we’re going the extra mile by bringing you an episode all about running and how it can help you build endurance – physically and mentally. So, if you’re ready to go the distance and find your stride, lace up and get ready to hear from today’s trailblazing guest, Dr. Nina Joy Mena. Dr. Mena, known as Dr. NJoy, is an Atlanta-based community psychiatrist, author, podcaster, and motivational speaker who is passionately dedicated to addressing mental health issues and reducing the stigma of mental illness within the Black community. An avid runner, she has completed 32 half marathons and 9 full marathons, including 4 international races, finding running to be her personal form of therapy.

Dr. Njoy and I chatted about how to get started with running, the role of running clubs as a form of community for runners, and the science behind the “runners-high” that can make running so beneficial to our mental and physical health.
